Being edited by a Co Moderator

Dear Dan;

I noticed you edited one of my posts. Why did you do that? In the years I've been here, no Moderator or Co Moderator ever has. As you did not email and speak to me privately, I thought this thread a proper venue. I asked recently if anything had changed in the forum policy and was assured by Rusty and yourself it had not. I'm unhappy with this development, and think you acted prematurely and out of bounds for your position. I am not unreasonable however, and would like to hear from you and any other forumite on this issue.

REally wierd. It was the one in which I imagined Yangdu wanting to get rid of the khuks hanging out too long in Titanic ll. For the life of me- the why of such an edit makes no sense. I thought it humorous how men and women can see things differently. Bill often says- "I can see nothing wrong with this rig, but Yandu says it's a blem so here you are." (paraphrase) Now- isn't that a classic difference of opinion between the sexes? I thought so.

I learned this from a forumite's email- and with the news another's post was deleted- I haven't found that.

This is against the years of tradition of HI.

That is not a good sign. We usually only edit for racism, child porn, and the like. Perhaps it's an oops.

See thread "6-16-4 Yangdu's still clearing house. Pix and deals" Post #4.

This is why we copy the thread to the back end forum and leave it there for reference.

I did just that when Pen insulted me, but didn't choose to ask that he be banned. Maybe I should have!!!

Bill has never banned anyone.

I banned one person ( and rebanned him in several subsequent incarnations ) in something like 5 years.

I make a few deletions, rarely, such as on the GIF link to the beheading of a waterbuffalo, but left ample explanation of why for the poster to understand.

Pen decides to delete Kendo in his first month as modeator despite being told I disagree that he needs to be banned. He comes back after several days off and promptly disregards that another moderator has been there, and posts on about 15 threads that have been posted in his absence. One thread was 4 days dead, but he pulls it back up and then locks it.

If you can't tell, I'm very upset.

It is not seen by regular forumites. You need to be a moderator to get into it. It is used to make a carbon copy of a thread that needs something done to it so we have the original full copy of something that might need to be deleted. It is also a place for moderators to get other moderator's feedback PREFFERABLY BEFORE action is taken.

Bill,
I don't know what to say. I think Pen thought he was protecting you- I had Yangdu and my own Wife wanting, "all this junk out of here." or some such- it really wasn't a big deal.

I sure as heck shoudn't have to tell you the high regard I have of you and this place you've made, or the finest khukuris on the market. I'm kinda thinking people know how I feel by now?

If I do- if a percieved 'mistep' by Pen is grounds for edit- then this is Pen's forum.

You and Rusty have not ever edited me or anyone else for that matter.

Maybe there's a learning curve to being a moderator.

I usually think a "less is more" approach to moderating is the best way.
On the forum I am moderator on so far the only post I have altered is when another moderator moved somebodies posts and that person wanted them deleted. However if somebody has a good reason for doing something I'm not opposed to them doing it.

Rusty,

I've sent you email. (I'll copy the same to Bill.)

Sorry for the trouble you're having. I can't say I'm surprised, however.

I think Pen's been doing a great job. The Kendo ban was a judgment call. As moderator he wears the horns and those decisions are ultimately his. If we constantly second-guess him, then we make his job that much harder.

Insults are usually sifted through the eye of the beholder, or the insulted one so to speak. (I asked a lady here at work from the UK if she would like a "ride", and she thought I was propositioning her! Should have said "lift" I guess.) :)

I have also found that there is nothing to prevent someone from being insulted in the heat of argument or disagreement, if they are determined to be insulted in order to gain a perceived advantage over their opponent. I'm not saying that is what happened in your case at all, but bringing up past bones of contention to buttress an existing complaint is counter-productive IMO.

I think we'll find that Munk's message was mistakenly modified or deleted, or something, but in any case I don't think we should second guess Pen before hearing from him.

In that spirit I think I'll give the benefit of the doubt and reserve judgment or opinion until then.

Thanks & regards,

Norm

I too will wait for Pen's reply before passing judgement. However, I will say that this thread has me concerned. Members upset with Moderators, Moderators upset with Moderators, and a SuperMod sending emails. Not the usual situation here.

I've made some pretty rank posts myself in the past that maybe should have been taken care of and they've been allowed to stand. From what I can recall of Munk's post I don't think it was bad enough to need deleted.

But now that Blues is here lets let Bill and the moderators take care of it. They'll get it settled soon enough.

Yvsa, you have said some things I've not appreciated as much as others. I would not have said some of them. None of them have been rank. If there was a problem, or hurt feeling, this could have been said. That is how friends talk.

The edit button is sort of like remote control for reality-don't like it- erase it, or change channel.
I don't believe I said anything terrible. That isn't the point. If I had, the amazing ability to say 'I'm sorry' is still intact between ourselves in the forum- until the edit or delete button takes that away.

That was a bonified oopsie, munk. I agreed with your comment 100% and that's why I posted the quote. It was supposed to be my reply.

Now, that said....it's good to see all this coming to light now....I missed this thread somehow....sorry I inadvertenly made everybody wait so long for a response. But I really appreciate those who were willing to defer judgment.

Glad to hear it, Dan. It was weird. You even put happy faces in my post- I don't use the little guys. And I couldn't figure out why you wouldn't write me first if you were going to do a edit or delete.

There was a post by someone saying, "what did we do to deserve these special deals?" Did the poster delete this?

Anyway- glad to hear.

This is the first I've heard of this, Rusty. Please let me know what you are refering to....If I have offended, I'm deeply sorry.

Again, Rusty....in doing any of the above, I have never purposely acted maliciously toward you. I have a deep respect for you and the wisdom you bring to the forum.

I have emailed Bill an explanation of my point of view. Bill - if anybody wants a copy, I'm ok with that. I have nothing to hide. I am sorry to have somehow offended those I consider my friends...and I hope all ties can be mended.
