Being without my pocket knives during the holidays... sucks

I flew out of town for the holidays. I didn't want to check in my knives in checked luggage and risk getting them stolen, so I opted to not bring any knives with me.

While my trusty flashlight is with me, I feel...naked...without my pocket knife.

So sad, that a man can't carry the most basic of tools these days while traveling. A few rotten eggs spoiled it for all of us. :(

Happy holidays and enjoy your knives if you have them with you.

I would have had to put something cheap in my luggage.
Even a 20-30 dollar folder would have made me feel better than nothing.

I try and avoid air travel for a number of reasons, that being one of them.

The few times a year I have to fly, I always pack an expendable knife in my checked luggage.

I will not fly---if I'm left to protect myself with a Kelly Worden Travel Wrench, a SureFire, and a rolled up magazine, I will not allow myself to end up in that position.

As far as I'm considered, I'll always drive---I get to see the sights, meet new people, and carry a firearm and a couple of beautiful edged tools.

Yeah, what he said.

And if I had no other choice but to fly, I'd have to get off the plane and buy a Case stockman with yellow handles or something equivalent and then mail it back to myself when I was getting ready to get back on that plane.

I can't remember a time I was without a knife of some sort.

With all the knife nuts on this forum, and probably the thousands of dollars you have all spent on knives you don't actually need, I would be surprised to find out that you guys are too paranoid to throw in an SAK or an opinel into your travel bag. If you lose it no big deal, right? If I lost an entire suitcase of luggage I think the last thing I'd be worried about is the loss of a cheap $20-$30 knife, and rather arriving somewhere new where I don't have clothes, or a toothbrush and such.

On the other hand, this purism means not visiting Italy, Paris, Bruges, Thailand, Scotland, the fjords in Norway, Egypt, Barcelona, etc... etc...
Frankly, you'd be missing out.

If you put a SAK in your checked in luggage, chances are low that it will be stolen. And should it get stolen, these things are plentiful and cheap.

Of course that purism also means if everybody refused to put up with the security circus at the airport it wouldn't take long before the airlines got rid of the TSA stupidity we are expected to put up with today. I have not flown commercial since 2000 and until they stop treating everybody like criminals I won't fly commercial again. They have accomplished nothing but turning travelers into a bunch of sheep.

One writer in a tactical type magazine, wrote that when he traveled abroad anywhere first thing he'd do when in the destination country was to go to a shop and buy a cheap fixed blade boning knife. Then he'd take electric tape and cardboard, fashion a crude sheath and carry it hidden in his waistband.
When he left the country he'd throw the entire rig away.
That way he at least always had a stout knife with him no matter where his travels carried him and he felt that was important in some of the third world countries he visited.

That's why you charter your own Gulfstream. Go big or go home, my friends.

In regards to the columnist buying a cheap fixed blade and carrying it concealed abroad...

The TSA and other airport security types search you for your items; while this can mean jail time, it will more often than not just result in simple confiscation.

If liberal law enforcement officers of a foreign state catch a foreign national carrying a concealed fixed blade, or you are found to defend yourself with such, I think you are in the deepest of doo-doo.

Contact the consulate immediately and really, really cross your fingers! :D

No one's going to steal your knife out of your checked luggage. I've been all over Europe with a SAK and I've even gone to California with a Benchmade 710 in my bag.

Tell that to Ken Onion---he had over $100,000 worth of his custom, handmade folders stolen from his checked luggage at an airport about a year ago.

While your knives might not get stolen the majority of the time, I still wouldn't carry anything with any value in my luggage, be it real value or sentimentality.

Gotta agree with Jill and Squeeze, if all your knives are way expensive buy a traveling blade. SAK Tinker runs about $15 and is darn handy to have along.

For me, I just take one of my regular carries and pack it in my bag, buried deep. I never carry expensive knives anyway, so if it gets lost it's not a catastrophe.

I am in London visiting family for the holidays. I really miss not being able to carry a proper sized locking folder.I have a suitably sized slippie for daily edc but I miss my Rekat Sifu...:(

I am in the habit of shipping things ahead when I know I am going to be flying somewhere, that way they are waiting on me when I arrive and no worries about the airline personnel having sticky fingers.

+1 on that! I rarely fly anymore.. Perhaps 5 - 6 flights since 9/11, but when I do fly, I go this exact same route as mentioned above by knarfeng. In fact, Ive accumulated a small stockpile of SAK Classics and Tinker's to keep for just such occasions.. And to give as gifts, mostly to folks for instant sheeple conversions. .. I've not lost one yet so far. [as he knocks wood]

outdoor guy08,

I don't know how much longer you will be out of town, but I can fix you up with a SAK lickety split if you like. My treat. Shoot me an email through the BF.com system and you'll have a razor sharp cutter in a few days to drop back in your pocket to stave off that naked feeling.. Let me know if I can assist.

Best,

Anthony

When I must fly I usually put my Case Sodbuster Jr in a pair of whittie tighties in my checked luggage. This has worked many times with no problems. Have taken it to England/Ireland several times. I never take an expensive knife when flying.

No kidding. An Opinel is $7. You can't hardly buy a new toothbrush and tee-shirt for seven dollars...

No, I know it happens. I'm just trying to get the dude to calm down about it.

Not being able to take a knife while flying is just one more excuse to go knife shopping when I arrive!!! Mail what ever I get when I go back. Sounds good to me.
