In the tradition of Bladeforums 1k post (ya, I know. I'm a little over) I'd like to do a giveaway. (I'm also a little motivated by Andy's recent generosity) I looked at my posts, and by far, I post here more than anywhere else.

Fiddleback Forge is hands down, my favorite custom. And this forum has had so many good tips about all kinds of topics- sharpening, sheath making, knife care, wild edibles, etc. The members here are a very nice crowd as well. This is my way to say thanks.

This will be a simple giveaway. I'd like to see fresh feathersticks made with your Fiddlebacks. :) Dont even think about pullin out an old pic.

Here are the rules:

1- Must own and use a Fiddleback Forge knife of your choice.

2- Must have more than 10 posts in the Fiddleback subforum.

3- Open to the 48 states (sorry international guys)

4- Must be a Gold member or higher

The prize is a firesteel I made this evening. It has a whitetail antler tip handle, rod was a Swedish blank 5/16" set in the antler with epoxy.

I'll let this run for a few weeks, or when interest slows down and then pick a winner.

Thanks guys. Now get your knives out and start carving! :)

Thanks for doing the giveaway schmittie! Great idea and very generous. That firesteel looks sweet.

I'm running low in my branch pile, so I split up some old firewood with my hatchet and Bushfinger to use for the feathersticks:

I thought I'd do a featherstick with each Fiddleback I have in my modest collection. So off to the front porch swing I go with six different models, from smallest to largest with some commentary:

Runt:
This one I thought would be the troublemaker and it was, both because of it's size and the fact that I EDC it almost everyday and it's in need of a sharpening. Curls weren't very smooth.

EDKarda:
Was thinking this one would be a lot easier than the Runt and in some ways it was. The longer handle offers better control, but it's so skinny in my big hands that it developed hot spots very quickly. I still love to EDC this knife, it just wouldn't be my go to woods knife :)

Kephart :
This knife is still very sharp and made nice long smooth curls effortlessly. The handle on mine is thin but still feels pretty well in hand. I love using this knife - the blade on it is gorgeous and it's a great carver.

Arete:
My other Fiddleback scandi. Another great carver. I could use this knife all day - it's very comfortable as the handle shape fits my hand perfectly.

Bushfinger:
My first Fiddleback - the one that started the madness for me. Very comfortable oversized handle. Beast of a knife at 3/16" but still performs well on just about everything except for maybe slicing veggies. If I could only have one FB to use for everything this would be it.

Hunter:
My largest Fiddleback (until I can swing a woodsman or camp knife). No problem with this. Another good all around knife. I use this one in the kitchen a lot - it still has a patina from cutting up chicken last night. I normally keep it nice and shiny but haven't polished it back up yet.

I was hoping to spend some more time on this today, but yard work and honey do's beckoned so I kinda rushed through it a bit. I wanted to do a few more comparison shots of all the knives together, maybe I'll have time later and will add them to this post.

Thanks again schmittie for doing the giveaway. It gave me a chance to play with knives for a few hours this morning so I've already received benefit from it even if I don't win.

Well done Thurin! What a wonderful idea carried through. You set the bar mighty high my friend. :)

Cool firesteel! Would you be willing to teach us how to make one of those?

It's really simple. Cut a piece of antler that is large enough to house your firesteel size of choice. Select a drill bit the size of your firesteel. (It may also be a good idea to start with a smaller drill bit and step up to your firesteel size. Antler seems a little fragile.) I drilled about 3/8" deep for the ferro rod. Add just a bit of glue (whatever you choose) and insert your rod til it's seated. Let it set, you are good to go.

Cool fire steel
Do you sell them as well?

Thanks, but I do not sell them. I came across 2 blanks in my gear and made two firesteels. One for me, one to give away.

Thank you for the generous offer schmittie. It is time to get cracking!

Thank you. I'm just trying to follow suit. There are lots of generous people here. ;)

I agree. Nicely done!

Oh, I'm going to get in on this one! Just wait till tomorrow!

Sweet! It's gonna be legen.....wait for it.....dary!

Quick update: I stropped the Runt this morning and gave it another go. Much better.

Here's a family pic to help keep us occupied until Mist's rain stops ;)

Minor details. :)

LOL, yes I know :)

Some very nice curls in this thread! Well here are mine...not my best, but not my worst either :) I got a short break from the rain so grabbed my Bushboot, wandered through the woods out back and found a nice seasoned piece of sycamore hanging in the tree. It was relatively dry-ish and dry on the inside...so took a very welcome break from the tactical world for a few minutes...

Look good Mist. Nice work and great pics as always!

In this pic it looks like the BF and Arete are winning :) Love the antique micarta on that hunter too.

I like that Hunter as well. It's a break from my otherwise dark Fiddlebacks.

LOL. The Kephart got jealous and had to prove her worth:

Thanks man, and nice curls! Yeah, the Kephart is my favorite bushcrafting knife of Andy's line up. If he continues on his current trend and makes a longer version of it I will have to have one.

Wow, Thurin and Mistwalker have some impressive curls here. Nice job gentleman.

Who's next??

Is this a double dog dare? :D

I'm in the grinder until Thursday but will look to post some up on Friday!
