I've been busy over the last month between work, a family camping trip and a guys only fishing trip so no time to look for axes. The antique mall in Charlotte is open the first weekend of the month so I headed out there this afternoon. I picked up this Belknap Bluegrass Double bit:

Roughly 8 1/2" bit to bit.

I dont know if the haft is original but it is fairly old, octagonal shape, good tight hang with a good wedge job (no nails, screws or other foreign objects), and it's 27 1/2 inches overall length.
(My tape measure is in the pic but of course you cant read it)

I THINK this is a cruiser size axe. Please let me know if that is not the case.

thanks for looking

Looks like a cruiser to me, and a darn nice one. Old octagonal handles are hard to find. Good score.

A Belknap cruiser of all things - jesus Double Ott is going to go nuts.

Nice find! Well done! Post the dimensions on the axe head to certify that it is a cruiser, but it does look like one.

Thanks for posting!

8 1/4" edge to edge at widest point, 3" tall at the eye, 4 1/8" tall at the edge. Eye is 2 3/8" X 5/8" inches.

The edge profiles don't exactly match but I will probably leave them as they are.

Yeah thats my bad - in my excitement I somehow didnt see the massive tape measure going across the top.........

way to go operator......sorry excited I guess! dont see belknap cruisers everyday!

Well done! Nice find! If the logo is crisp and no issues it is a hell of a find.

Thanks!

Yes, Operator. the logo is crisp and legible (with a magnifying glass, not my old eyes). I tried filling it with white paint for the pic which didn't work and just made a big mess.

And for an oops, look closely at the second pic. The tape measure is there, but you can't read it. lol.

I have one other Belknap axe. So are the cruisers that rare? or just not that common?

PS. I paid $35 for it. It didn't have a price on it and the guy wasn't at his table when i first saw it and he had a few more old axes priced from $35 to $70. It's the first cruiser I've seen around here for sale since I started looking, so I had decided if he said $50 or less, it was coming home with me. $35, no haggle price, lol

Nice!! Great find. A Belknap cruiser, you don't see many of them babies.

357, good job on that one. I figure i will hit this one lightly with a wire brush on the angle grinder, touc.h. u. p the edgeds and call it done.
I want to make an axe cover for.it. anybody got a pic of what one should.look like?

thanks, Double_ott. I now have double bits in all of the sizes I think. (saddle axe, cruiser, regular 3-1/2 to 4 lb, and a Puget Sound). I cleaned this one up a little this week and started coating the haft with BLO. I'm thinking that this one might become my number 1 camping axe.

I have one with similar dimensions I just picked up, but the 3 1/2 pound weight puts it at the high end for a cruiser, and it looks like it's had a bit of the edge filed back so it would have been even heavier and had thinner edges. Still, who is really to say what it is, it's a bit arbitrary, to say the least. I would consider yours a cruiser, mine I just wish she was a bit lighter.
