My son picked up a nice Bluegrass today, nice sharp stamp and really good condition over all. The bits are a lil' shy on the toes, but not bad. Bit to bit it measures 8 1/2", and the head weighs 2.62 pounds. Typical cruiser, right? The only problem is it doesn't have a cruiser sized eye, it has a full sized tapered eye. Did Belknap cruisers have a full sized eye??

Any chance that this head was re-sharpened within an inch of it's life (ie worn out)?

I really don't think so. I looked it over pretty well, the toes are only a little shy the heels look full. In other words, I really don't think nearly a pound has been filed away..

Sounds a bit heavier than average cruiser, maybe just a lighter weight axe, eg 2 3/4#. Wasn't Bluegrass usually just Kelly? Might look at both catalogs.

I always thought they were Kelly. My father had a Belknap hatchet that I remember sharpening stakes with when I was 6 or 7 years old. He bought it at a local hardware store that sold the brand, the store owner told him the axe line was made by Kelly. Dad lost the hatchet when he backfilled a ditch back in the 70's.

My son's axe measures, and looks the same except for the little bit of wear on the toe, but, his is stamped in the center of the eye.

Ding, ding, ding..winner! I started brushing on the head last night, turns out there was a lightly stamped 3 on the head. So, it was a lighter head.

Cruisers are hot right now. I could see someone reshaping a worn full size into a cruiser.
The head was vintage, and rusty on the side opposite the stamp. With some pitting on one side I have started to profile the head to do just what you said.
