I've been working on a couple hawks and this belt ax the last couple weeks. Its got a 3 1/4" cutting edge and the head is 6" with an 18 1/2" haft which I believe is hickory but I'm really not sure. Its got a half buckskin wrap with turks head knots to finish it off. The knots are round leather. The head was hand forged from 1" square 1084/95....

Go Ray. You keep changing styles on me and they keep getting more interesting. You make me envious with the Turks head. Sometimes mine turn out....sometimes they don't. If I haven't done one for a while, they don't!

Beautiful ax! :)

Peter, I've got a book on leather braiding somewhere in my pile but couldn't find it. Did find this link: http://www.northnet.org/ropeworks/archive/Aturkhed.html Sure helped me a bunch. I tried to teach myself with the book and I got so darn frustrated with it it just sat for 2 years. One of the other hawks is for a customer who wants a turks head knot so I thought I'd better learn it....

Ray, the local temps will be in the low 80's, from Wed. through Tues. But as they say in New England, "It ain't the heat, it's the humidity" :D

Did I mention, there's about a 30 to 40% chance of showers! :grumpy:

Larry, Maybe I'll bring a bar of soap. I've heard about the humidity, one of the reasons for me not being back there for 53 years. It will be nice getting to meet some of you guys, I can put up with the humidity for a few days.....

We do not worry about rain. Everything is covered. The smithy is opened on three sides. Now if we have lighting then I am not going next to my press.  :D

Wow Raymond! I had to pull up the pic you emailed me to see if it was the same head. It's barely reconizable as the same one. I love the finish on it. It really looks a whole lot better. Just what color is the turks head and leather?
You really are quite the worker.
I gotta save some $$!

Tom, Good question about the color. I used chocolate leather dye on the buckskin and turks head. I'm really not awake enough to give you a good answer yet.
