Hi folks
I picked up this head from a friend who purchased a trunk full of late 19th century native pieces and a few other bits including this head. According to family history the trunk contents were owned by one of the many Klondike gold rushers who walked from Edmonton to the Klondike. The trunk was purchased in Edmonton.
My questions are, is the shape of the late 19th century, is the mark right for the period and has anyone seen this mark before? The mark reads NKRE and the head is 5 5/8ths long by 3 3/8ths on the cutting edge.
I have also posted this on Bernard Levines forum.

Thanks and best regards

Robin

Nice find...wish I could help you with some info...Let us know what you find out...

Thanks Dusty
Because of it's possible relationship to the gold rush in the Klondike my mind was immediately drawn to the K in the mark. There was a large group of gold "rushers" who walked from Edmonton to the Klondike often called the Klondike River Expedition and I found one article calling it the North Klondike River Expedition. That is what I would like NKRE to to mean.;-))) Wishful thinking on my part for sure. ;-)
Bernard Levine thinks that the mark could be a partial strike which could be true as the N at front end of the mark is quite light in comparison to the E at the back end.

What is the "800", some reference to steel type? Saw an axe on Ebay the other day stamped 800.

Bernard Levine said he thought it looked Scandinavian in shape, so I'm thinking the 800 could mean 800 grams = 1.76 lbs which is about what it weighs, I'll weigh it later at the gerneral store ;-))
Was the axe you saw on ebay a small head like this one?

Thanks very much Cegga, there are quite a few that are close to the one I have. It would be great to find out more about it.

Thanks again and

OK, it turns out that Bernard Levine was right (what else is new))) It is a Scandi, 800 is the gram mark and the mark should read DANKRE who is a maker. Still have to find out what age it is but it looks like my Gold rush fantasy is just that ;-)))

I have to say, I like my fantasy better than the facts :D But it's still a really nice axe that I can now clean up and haft for personal use. I haven't been able to find out how long DANKRE has been making axes, maybe Ceggas Guru will know.

Best regards

Robin
