I work in the woods as a wildlife biologist and wildland fire recon scout. I like to have a hatchet or small axe on my side. I want it to be less than $50 USA. I recently got a Vaughan Sub-Zero and have to laugh. It is SOOOOOO SMALL that in my hands it looks like less than a toy. Granted I am 6'8" and 300 pounds, but I needs something a little more. Maybe 1.0-1.25 pound head and a 12-14 inch handle.

I love this vintage picture I found of a belt axe, but have not idea the maker or model?

Love the handle pattern...absolutely love it and the head looks great too. It said Jonsered as in Husqvarna and Jonsered on the photo, but obviously a vintage piece.

Let me see...6'8"/300 lbs. and you want something that looks proportional on your belt. Like, maybe a Gransfors American Felling Axe?:D O.K. I'm done with the comic routine. Seriously, I found a Plumb Scout Hand Axe on Ebay last year. It pretty much matches the dimensions you've suggested. The steel is great. Mine did not have any kind of mask/sheath. Fabricating a carry system isn't all that challenging. For what it's worth, I'm with you on the tiny axes...even the expensive ones. I'm a fan of the hand axe size you've suggested.

What do you need to do with your hatchet that the sub zero(assuming the mini one) is too small?

Husqv. 13 inch hatchet is in your weight range. Here with 15 inch handle

the smaller is GBmini with 11.5"

(measured to bottom of the head.)

There are so many choices for quality axe heads-the more difficult aspect in making your own. Changing the helve to suit your needs only makes sense.

I need to have one that can shop the backbone & brisket of a bear or elk, cut firewood in the wilderness, sound trees, use as an edged weapon....fit my XXL hand size...oh yeah and be carried with the rest of my gear for 10-57 miles. 57 the most I have done!

Anyone recognize the one above I posted????? I would love that one!

That looks like a custom piece to me. Or maybe one that was pimped out by the user. Where did you find the picture?

I'd go with the Husqvarna Hatchet...

Here's the site...www.husqvarna.com
Here's a place to buy it for $39.99...Amazon

You could mod it to look like the one in that picture. It looks like that handle was scorched on the top and bottom and then stained. It can easily be done on your own.

For a durable work tool, check out the Estwing 24a or it's big brother the 44a. Either one of these should do you just fine.

Ya know...I was really hoping that was an old manufactured brand. I might have to talk to him about a new one. Wonder if he makes those handles.

you could do what some others have done and buy a good old hatchet and fix it up. there are some old tools that look good. even good old hatchets have gone up in price. keep an eye on internet auctions and gain some education as to what things are going for compared to what condition they are in.

If I was about to walk off 50 some miles (lord help me:eek:) I would take a mini hatchet and a small saw of some type. It is more efficient to saw to cut wood than to wail away with a hatchet or axe, even though it is fun.

Pat.

I am also 6'8", 330 pound, even though big ole boy after a while all the stuff gets heavy.

Pat....good to see another giant in the mix. Guys that work for me call me Sasquatch. Funny since we work in the area of Sasquatch around Willow Creek Calif....

I am doing just what you recommended. In the meantime i have ordered the Cold Steel Trail Hawk and will get a head and fix it up when I find one that catches my eye.

I am lost, I will admit it. I want one of all so I can find the one...............is that possible?

I do like the looks of the OP axe, looks like it would be very efficient.
