(Inspired by a recent thread on "bag-carrying")

How do you prefer to belt-carry your Khukuri?

Make your choice and give an explanation.

I haven't carried all that much yet..but must agree with Skag. I like the way the sheath can be adjusted to slip out of the way of your thigh.

It is likely,as with firearms, with prolonged miles I'd switch sides. I'm not in the shape many here are. I am going to try bag carry even though I think those kind of bags ill-advised for long journeys..have to admit most trips are short.

I voted for left side. I also tend to prefer crossdraw. Mainly because most of the khukuris that I love are long, so crossdraw is best for that. If I am out with a smallish one, it goes right side rear. Over the but cheek. I lift the scabbard tip up to the left with my left hand and draw the khuk out sort of parallel with the deck with my right hand. If this makes any sense.

I voted left, for crossdraw, because that is the way I tote my 18" Sirupati;tried it strongside but the longer handle kept bumping my arm, plus being able to reach it easily with my left hand is a plus.Having said all that my BAS works better on my right side:shorter handle and longer belt loops. Guess the khuk'll let you know where it wants to go...

Sure does make sense! That's Ray C's quickdraw in a nutshell and the carry I use for all khuks that have looser scabbards. The really tight ones (like the 2 I chopped with at Konvention) I wear cross draw.

I actually don't understand how you would draw a 20" blade with a tight scabbard by strong side carry? Can someone explain this to me?

Left Side for me. I'm sometimes a klutz and would probably cut my right leg off if I carried on my strong side.

Left side. Seems to make the most sense and feels best to me. Besides, the Gorkhas on the FAQ page all seem to be carrying left side and I suppose they should know more than just a little about what works best. :)

I voted left, but I'm still experimenting. My 18" GS was on my left and my villager was on the right today while I was giving the GS a field test.:D So far the villager has been on the right. Patrick

I carry strong side with my 15 inch AK and my 18 inch WWII. I put it behind the hip towards the small of the back. I find this to be much easier to draw and replace in this position. The WWII is trickier than the AK, which slides in and out perfectly. I think I'll favor a cross-draw with the 18 inch GS I'm getting.. but we'll see.

Through ebay, I got a big surplus military belt that has a nice, shiny XI Gurkha Rifles buckle. The khuks fit on this gunbelt this quite well. I would reccomend this method of carry to you guys no matter what mode you prefer.

Seems like the majority of my khuks fall into the 18"-20" length. Crossdraw (left side)works best for me.

I carry on the left side, out to the front a little bit, because unless it's less that 10" in overall length (and all good chopping outdoors type khuks are more than this), the handle will always hit my arm. Not a big problem, just an annoying one.

Since I'm a lefty too I've tried both on the right and behind in the small of the back too.
I usually stay with the behind carry. I've found it too annoying to try to sneak up on a branch and keep my trousers up at the same time as tends to happen w/ right carry. I imagine the this would be the same time a bear ( sorry couldn't resist) would come along, assess the situation, laugh his ursine a$$ off and think "hey look lunch meat!"
What I really need is a sam browne belt. Seen 'em n Ebay, but guess I'm too lazy to type in a bid.

Wow.

I'm really surprised. I thought that I was the only weirdo carrying on my left side. From the FAQ/etc. it seems like the front or right side was more "correct".

Propriety out the window...practically takes over.

When I got my first Khuk I immediately strapped it to my left side. It looks funny that way, but much easier for me to draw.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/a.../forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=1677501since I am semi ambidextrous I found that the shorter Khuk's {BAS} work well on my weak side{Right} due to the lower drop of the sheath. The longer Khuk's {12"blade max}placed handle toward's the Left semi-horizontal along the small of the back is very fast. It' also the year's of muscle memory from carrying on the left. You can see that in the picture that Russ Kay took at the K'Konvetion.

When I've had a khuk on a belt its always been on the left side so far.
I may try small of back if I ever get limber enough to draw the khuk from that position as it looks to be the most comfortable except for when you might want to set down.
When you have a gut like mine though left side carry tends to put an angle to the scabbard making the khuk very easy to withdraw as well as resheath.;)

Ill be the wierd one and say I never carry my khuk on my belt. Usually carry it in hand, or in a bag. Have sometimes tucked into waist of pants, or put somewhat into pants pocket. I like holding the scabbard when I draw, and am never smart enough to figure out how to fit the scabbard between the pant belt loops in advance :D.
