Belt Grinder Angle Base

I am pretty decent holding my blade at the angle I desire but surely not perfect. Thought how could I make my Kalamazoo set for the angle I want. Below are some of the shots I took so that you can also see how simple it was. You can take any belt grinder and mount it on a plate. I use 3/8" aluminum that I had laying around. You can even use plywood.
1. Mounted the grinder base to the plate and added a piece of hinge to the back. This will be the pivot point.
2. Mounted a piece of angle iron to the front of the plate.
3. Drilled two clearance holes on each end for 3/8" threaded rod. Added rubber ends to the rods. (optional)
4. Used four 3/8-16 hex nuts for making angle adjustments.
5. Added a small level to angle plate. Helps to adjust each rod evenly.
I now can set my angle cube on the machine and adjust from 25 degrees per side down to 0 degrees.
Holding the blade 90 degrees to the bench you can sharpen to the angle you want with quite a bit of accuracy. IMO
Remove threaded rods and the grinder is back to 90 degrees on the bench. Will look into making a gauge to make the adjustments a bit faster.
Thanks for looking
Ron

I like that idea a lot! That's for the tip-I will be doing this myself!

Glad you like it. I was thinking about a step block to place under the plate. It would have 12 1/2, 15, 20 degree angles cut in it and placed under the plate to get me in the ballpark, prior to final adjustment. This will also support the base when making the adjustments to the threaded rods.
Any other suggestions always welcome.

Nice setup rpttrsn.

What about attaching a couple of Stop Collars (or something similar) to the front, then using a rod with the angles pre marked, similar to how the Edge Pro sets the angle? Then just loosen the collars, set to the mark, and tighten?

Edit: in thinking abut it, you wouldn't even need to attach the stop collar, just set it up so the collar would be underneath the angle iron... then it would sit on the collars. (Might be easier attached though).

Sounds like a good idea. Would need a allen wrench or a thumb screw and have to get low to see the marks. A step block would be the same every time. Three to four or more steps in one block. You idea is quite easy so I could try both and see which one works best for me. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks. You could set it up so that, even though the collars are on the bottom, the marks could be read on top of the angle iron.

Even though the angle cube would set the machine at the angle, it doesn't mean that I would hold it exactly 90* to the table. I could be off a bit. The marks on the rod, using the angle cube to position them could be good enough. There is always human error when holding by hand. Just thinking.

Made up gauge for setting angle on belt grinder. Just lift the base and place the gauge under it and with the base resting on the gauge, adjust the legs till they make contact with the bench. The 12.5 and the 15 degree came out right on the money. The 20 degree came out 19.80 degrees. Just got lucky. Might not need to use the angle cube when setting up the machine.

Wow... that's pretty cool. Not what I pictured. Very professional looking too.
