I am just starting to make custom knives, and was wondering what model belt grinder would be best to get. i don't have a huge budget, but any help would be greatly appreciated. links or pictures would also be very helpful.

Thanks,
Noah

You really need to clarify your budget. Without that as a baseline we will not know whether or not we should be sending you towards the Coote and or Grizzly or towards the KMG or bader. ALso are you handy, IE can you tap and drill holes if so we might even push you towards the DIY grinder sold by Polarbearforge.com.

my budget is pretty much below $500. I was looking at the polar bear forge and was going to look around and see what people said about its performance. I would say im within the medium skill range for DIY, but i didnt want to buy that just to find out that i lacked the necessary skills.

Check this one out by Grizzly. I know what you mean. I would like a grinder that cost 3000.00 but I would settle for this one just to start out with.

That's a tough budget to get a good grinder on, but it can be done. I'm sure you could find a decent used Grizzly 2x72 for under $500 and it would serve you well.

I bought the Grizzly first for the same reason, price....and while it served me well, I very quickly wanted more. I still have mine and use if for a lot of things, but I bought a KMG fairly soon after I bought the Grizzly.

I'm in the same boat as you and don't have tons of extra cash after the mortgage and bills are paid every month, but I did have a good collection of knives that I had amassed over the years and just bit the bullet. Sold a bunch of 'em to fund the KMG because I knew it was something I really wanted to do. I would say, if you are serious find a way to get a great product:thumbup: Hell, I sold a couple of guitars and a brand new Streetbike jacket so that I could get a good grinder without dipping into family money. It can be done!:D

Hehe, post above mine came in while I was typing.........Best of luck whatever your choice. One last piece of advice, don't be so anxious to get started that you run out and buy the first piece of equipment you can afford. It might be a better investment in the long run to hold out a bit longer in order to get something that will be more useful overall.

The good thing about the grizzly is that it also has the buffer. If you get something better later you can use the sander for your scales and the buffer as intended. I think this model cost 524 shipped to your door.

thanks for all of the reply's! can the grizzly do convex grinds and profile blades?

thanks,
noah

I don't believe you should figure your skills will be up to getting 100% out of any grinder you buy. That will be normal. What is the going to be a big thing is to develop your skills by use of the grinder. It sure seems to work that way foe most of use and2" X 72" belt grinder is the right thing to get for sure.
