Belt grinder - suggestions

Hi folks,

I was planning on purchasing a KMG grinder but my funds may not allow me to, at present. Can you folks give me your suggestions on what grinder you would suggest that's a step down from the KMG? I would like to do both flat and hollow grinds. I'm also open to suggestions for what to do for grinding small radii (something inexpensive to replace the small wheel attachments like the Bader and KMG have?). Finally, what can be done for slowing the speeds down on the suggested grinders. I bought a new 2hp baldor 110/220 motor for a really good price but am not sure what would be the best option(s) for using it.

Anyhow - sure would appreciate your suggestions.

Best regards,

Well Dana, the Grizzly is only like $199 I think. Bonus there is that you get a buffer too. There are a few mods out there people have tried to make them work better. I've seen some great knives come off a Grizz. :)

I bought a Grizzly knife grinder 2 weeks ago. It works well. The only problem I had was that I had to adjust the tracking often. It may be because it's needs some break-in time. Price was $279.

Either break in time, not setup quite right, or belts, I'd guess.

Well, not like I've used a bunch of them, but mine, which I bought used from someone who used to post here, has no trouble with tracking. I adjust it, if need be, when I put a new belt on, and it tracks right there the whole time.

Never having used a Grizzly I don't know how the tracking works but often tightening up the tension on the belt will help. As to speed control, get a set of step pulleys and you'll be pleased with the result.

But Hey! Why not save up a little longer for the KMG? You'll be glad you did. :D

I've used a pair of Grizzlys for the past 4 years and I'm adding a KMG from Rob next month. The Griz is a good way to start for the money. Once you build things up a bit, then add the KMG. Believe me, you'll want more than one grinder after awhile. ;)

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. I'll have to ponder these things over
and let you know what happens in the next few weeks.

Kind regards,
Dana
