I am ready to purchase a belt grinder and would like some input. $1500 plus is a chunk of change and I would like to get the best value I can. At some point it would be smarter to buy a used milling machine and build my own grinder. Some questions to be addressed are: versatility, availability of attachments, initial cost, wheel size (rough or smooth) and motor horsepower. Anyone have experience with the KMG grinder? Is there some other option from an independent that is quality made? Thanks

i just got a cheapy from harbor freight tools. $39.99, 1 x 30 belt. may not work for you, but it does well for me.
this shows $59.99 but they sold to me for $39.99 because they did not have the one i went to get... and i'm friends with the manager

If you're serious, and only if you're serious about making knives, get the KMG. Everything I've read says it's the best, most versatile machine out there. I'm saving for one now. If you're not sure, get a Coote. $410 + motor & accessories, will get you a good machine you can either hollow or flat grind on. They have a good reputation for design and performance, as well. Buy the best you can afford. You'll be happier, and turn out a better product that way, IMO.
