Hi Guys:
I have a Basic Combat 9 and am beginning to appreciate it more and more each time I use it.

The first time I done some serious chopping with it I did it on the end of a piece of firewood that unknownst to me had a slew of small,bb sized rocks embedded in it and I chipped the edge something fierce due to direct contact with the little rocks.

I managed to get the edge close to original and after getting a new 2" X 72" belt grinder finally restored it to the original sharpness.

I used a 320 grit belt and my edge isn't as aggressive as the original.
Don't get me wrong, it shaves hair and slices paper and carboard with a vengeance!!

I recall when I first got it that I wondered how an edge that felt so rough could be so damned sharp.
I would like to restore it back to its true factory edge with the aggressiveness that was present then.
Can anyone tell me what grit belt is used for the factory edges?

Many thanks!

Believe it or not, it's with a belt less than 320...it's in the technique my friend in nuclear toughness.

You should drop Jerry a private note to get some tips on making your belt sander function as your personal Busse factory edge machine...

Thanks Andy. I will do that one of these days. I knew it had too be of a coarser grit belt than 320. That's why I asked what grit. Now bein the stubborn guy I am I will have to ty some different grit belts on some raw steel to see if I can match the original finish.

Cliff:
Mine is a basic combat 9 which would put it into the basic series.

meaning they were a nuclear pain about 25 inches below the neck.

Cliff..yes I believe it's the standard for the Basic line as well, but we need Jerry to jump in here and confirm it.

Just what is the "Basics Line?" Does that mean all the Busse knives made with INFI other than MOD-INFI?
I thought the basic line was the Basic Combat Knives,3,5,7 & 9.
I have to admit too paying more attention too results than details though.

Yours in nuclear yak like innocence.

Yvsa :

Just what is the "Basics Line?"

The M-INFI models just as you noted. The reason I asked was that my Basic #7 came with a polished edge so I figured you were talking about a INFI model, and of course missed the fact that you specifically referred to the #9.

Anyway, as for sharpening, after a lot of use the M-INFI and INFI blades do need to be recut on a hard abrasive, AO grit is actually softer than a lot of the alloy carbides in high end steels. If you don't recut the bevel you will end up with rounded carbides in the edge. It will shave and appear to be sharp but will not slice at all.

If you are going with belts I would try SiC or Diamond abrasives. Last time I did this on the BM, I used SiC sandpaper for the convex part of the bevel and a SiC waterstone for the flat. I then finished on a finer hones and then a strop.

Thanks for the clarification and confirmation Cliff.
I only have one AO belt and it came with the grinder.
All the rest I bought were SiC.

I believe the methods you stated were what was causeing me the problem with the edge before I got my grinder.
It took a minimal of metal removal to bring the edge back to what it originally was with it.

The original edge had a shiny, polished appearance and yet was much coarser than the edge I got with the 320 SiC belt.

I am going to leave it as is for awhile and see if the polished edge holds up better for me and what I use the blade for.(everything)
So far trimming, bark removal and some minor splitting in Bois D'Arc the edge seems less inclined to deform.
This was cutting on some freshly cut wood and also some that is well seasoned and probably about 60 years old. Bois D'Arc is known for is ability to wreck edges on about any sharp edge, especially the well seasoned wood. It will ring like a bell when a good sized piece is tapped with a piece of steel.

I may have inadvertently changed the flat grind angle a bit, but the knife is still a wonderful slicer.

Perhaps the fubar I had with it at the beginning led to more questions, but I would have liked to have tested the original edge longer.
I wasn't willing to send it off to be resharpened by the factory.
