Howdy All;

Generally they are with a Sheep's-foot tip. a thick spine for when one needs to baton it for a quick thick cut.
Should be able to keep it's edge and survive a salt air environment. Any thoughts? Oh, and if this has been
discussed before some links would be nice.

thanks for the ideas, suggestions and thoughts.

Boye, Myerchin, Spyderco Enuff H1 or a custom.
Spyderco Jump Master 1 if you can find one.

Howdy All;

Ok, this will be used by someone on a Deep water tug. May have to slice/chop a thick line in a hurry
maybe 21/2 " or perhaps even 3" OD. Myerchin are decent for a boater/yachtsman type but I wouldn't
try to baton one what with the cut-out for shackles in the blade. My friend would have his Marline spike
sheath stitched to the scabbard. Pointed knives are in general not looked upon with a friendly eye aboard
ships. Sheepsfoot ends help keep folks from sticking themselves and others.
I used to use an 8" Old Hickory with the tip ground into a sheepsfoot configuration overall the blade was
just under 6". I was just thinking that there might be something a bit stouter and classier around nowadays.
He helped me out of a tight spot a while back and I'd like to do something to help him in his new job.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Myerchin makes knives that seem to fit your needs.

Yup, OP - check out the Myerchin Gen 2 Offshore. Comes with a spike in the sheath.

I'm sure it is strong enough for batoning through rope, even with the shackle key cutout in the blade. The blade is 4mm thick at the spine.

Boye knives are the best. From the sailors I know, the prohibition on pointed knives is historical and not practiced today.

I was a Boatswain’s Mate in the USN for fifteen years. Used my knife easily 10 times a day for that period. When I eventually found what worked best for me, it looked like this:

Thanks for your service 'Boats'.
This a look-a-like of what you had or is what you have? Whichever it's a nice one.
Has possibilities. Thanks, still huntin'.

The knife pictured is a look-a-like. This is the actual piece. This, and a navy issue marlin spike in a home built leather sheath served me well for about the last ten years on deck 😊👍.
