The males in my wifes family and I are planning a week long canoe trip. In norteastern oklahoma. Last weekend we were at a local lake basically testing our gear(these are new canoes and I insisted we get familiar before the trip). I had a spyderco temperance on my belt and a rat 3 in my day bag. The temperance has a just over 4 inch blade. My wife's dear uncle proceeded to tell me that I was not carrying a big enough knife. Not that I care what he thinks. I did get to thinking maybe I should look at a 6''to 8'' fixed blade as I will not be taking my khukri. I had a D2 RAT-7 but my brother "borrowed it" when he got deployed. I need ideas from you fine individuals as to what knife to get my target is under 200$ and no leather sheaths.

Stainless is nice in a canoe , Fallkniven A1 or A2. I'd take a 4" also.

Unless he lives out in the rural area of that part, probably just macho BS :jerkit: Unless you are going deep into the would four inches should be enough for most things.

I agree with groovy that its probably macho BS. But if you really want a new blade you may try Ranger RD6 or the scrapyard scrapper 6 Neither are stainless but both would serve well.

I'd say get another D2 RAT-7. IMO, great knives.

I think if one or two individuals are packin' a big blade then there should be enough to go around and your 4" blade should be fine. I mean, how many do all of you need for the trip? Maybe throw in a good hatchet or folding saw in your kit to round out the selection.

well I have never had a use while camping for a knife much bigger than my rat-3 or my becker necker. When my wife and I go camping I bring either my khukri or a small ax for wood gathering purposes. After talking to these guys more this morning I have determined that there normal idea of being outdoors is bringing a camper trailer. I called my father who has canoed this particular river multiple times and he said to get a decent size knife and keep it on my belt in the event I am dumped or become separated. But yes most of it was macho posturing because the same individual that said it is also bringing his Desert Eagle in none other than .50 AE.

I would go for a Grohmann #1 or #3. These a great all purpose knives, about 4" stainless (or carbon) blade, about 8.5" overall. Full tang construction.

They do come with leather sheaths but Normark at On Scene Tactical makes kydex sheaths for these exact knives. I believe the kydex sheath can be strapped (jury-rigged) to your PFD while in the canoe.

Good luck!

I have it figured out. Im going to get a 1095 RAT-7 and attach it to my belt. I already have a spyderco assist attached to my pfd so Im really not wanting to attach anything else. Between a RAT & and the manix I keep in my pocket I think I can handle all cutting chores that come my way.

Awfull hard to do a good job cleaning a panfish with a blade much larger than 4 inches....if one of you has a hatchet....and your not planning on taking out any ninjas on your trip a 4 inch blade should be fine IMO....The Temperance is an excellent knife, I wish they still made them

see riley I have never felt like I didnt have enough knife with either my temperance or my RAT-3 or even my becker necker. I use an axe or khukri for gathering wood but I dont like those type of things attached to my belt.

If you've never felt under geared...than you probably are not...How you feel is probably alot better an indicateor than anyones opinion....The beauty of a conoe trip is that you don't have to carry an axe on your belt leave it in a bag lashed to part of the boat a small to medium fixed blade is more than adequate...any aboringinal/Native person from 100 years ago would probably give a lung to have a spyderco temperance...and they did made fine survivalists and bushman....If your really concerned a small machete w/12 inch blade could fill in as a chopper and a quality one can be had for 20-30 dollars but I think with an axe or a folding saw or both and any of the blades you normally carry you'll be good to go...But that's JMOYMV above all If you bring a Bowie or penknife...Have a great time and enjoy...

I appreciate the help guys. One of the guys said he is bringing his chainsaw so Im now unconcerned about fire building. But im going to lash a smaller hatchet to my pack for when his chainsaw gets left in the pickup because of the weight or it gets dumped.
