belt life frustration

Anybody else have 120 grit belts that last less than 5 minutes? I'm not talking about AlOx either, these were nice and expensive. It's almost enough to make me stop using high vanadium steels...

My grinder is single speed 5400fpm, is that the bigger problem?

That is the bigger problem. As the grit goes up, the speed must come down, for best results.

Next would be the high alloy.

5400 sfpm!?? WOW! At that speed I'm surprised they last 5 mins. Before I slowed it down my old Square Wheel did 4600sfpm, and it would "slick" a belt in no time. Definitely
a speed issue.

As Don said......the finer the grit, the slower you want it moving to realize the best finish and belt life.

Yeah Ed, I used an old Sq Wheel for many years before going variable and those old grinders scream!

5400fpm is flat cookin, and not in a good way ;)

ah, okay, thanks... not a lot of grinder selection in Canada, but I can modify my Bee to run a bit slower
