Hi, I am considering getting a leather belt pouch for my small regular Sebenza. Has anyone experience with the standard one from Chris Reeve or should I consider a custom version. Please advice.

I use a CRK belt pouch sheath and find if first rate. As with all of Reeves products it is as close to perfect as production can get. You will not be disappointed. The same sheath is made to fit both the small and the large Sebenza. There are simply two snaps, on the sheath, to accommodate both sizes.

I have no experience with the CR sheaths but I've got lots with the ones I make! :)

Thought someone was taking pics of your work and selling it as their own there for a sec. No one(very few) else does them so nice.

Gee I never thought o' that Greg! This site wouldn't let me register under my other name so I had to switch. :(

MtMike made me an outstanding pouch out of leather/buffalo. Wish I could post pics. I get more compliments on the pouch than on the large Mayonized Sebbie in it.

Carl, I've handled the sheaths from CRK and they are ingenious in design, allowing to be worn either vertical or horizontal, though the horizontal limits you as to how wide a belt it will fit on.

And Mike Tea's sheath is very cool, cleanly and stoutly made!
And he has the ability to make one without your needing to send him your knife, a huge plus!

Can't go wrong with the CRK sheath, moderately priced and solid.
Can't go wrong with Mike's either, a little more money but you are getting a custome sheath with his loving care, that in it self adds to your purchase!

I'd say go with what you like/see, you can't lose on this question either way.
Enjoy!

Now this is a class act from Gary. Nowhere does he mention that he too makes custom sheaths including for the Sebenzas. He simply lauds Mike's stuff and comments about the worthiness of the CRK ones too.

Amazing and reflective of the ethics Gary is so well known for. Yup, you can't go wrong with these guys :)!!!

Yeah no kidding! I was just e-mailing back & forth with Gary the Gent and then I went downstairs to do some more leather. While I was there I was thinking of this post of his and going "Uhh why didn't he mention himself?" Maybe he's too busy, but somehow I doubt it!

Mike Tea.

Thanks Bob and Mike, I learned a long time ago, that I surely can't make all the sheaths that are needed and there are plenty of folks in want of having sheaths made with so few that have the talent to do so. So my responding to this thread was because I had first hand knowledge of a CRK sheath and I've seen closeups of Mike's sheath and as he mentioned we've cyber chatted a few times seems like a decent sort and has a gift with leather and like me, he cycles as well ;)

Since we're on the subject of Gary, let me repeat for the newcomers that when I was starting out, Gary freely shared all the knowledge and techniques I asked him about and he continues to do so.
Truly a class act and a gentleman.
Someday I hope my sheaths look nearly as good as his.

Thanks Dave always good to talk with you!
And Carl, I didn't want to bring the whole family into the picture, but only speak about those that were in this thread, but since Dave is here, you would do well to take a look at his web page also, as his work is getting around the country more and more and he has experience with making sheaths for the Sebenzas.

And thanks John for posting the pic, that is a horizontal sheath, it's shown in a vertical position in his photo but it goes onto the belt horizontally, with three sets of footprints, one for each of John's children and when he ordered it, the third hadn't yet arrived. John has since sold/traded his Sebenza but kept the sheath as he figures he will fill it up again sometime.

There are several fellows that do work the leather and frequent the forums, if you haven't tried searching for sheaths you might want to do that to see some that aren't mentioned here, but of these guys already listed, you will be well served.

Personally, I do not care for Reeve's Sebenza sheath. At least not the new ones. Yes, they are designed to carry either Large or Small, but if you carry the large Sebenza, you have an ugly empty snap looking at you on the front of an otherwise nice looking leather pouch. I just don't like the looks of it.

Danbo, thought about that and yes it does look like an ugly red headed step child, left alone on the front porch, but that is just an opening for something cool to go there, take a snap head, epoxy on a special small coin to the face of it, you need to scrape the metal well inorder for the epoxy to adhere strongly, and viola a nice decorative item that you can snap in place :)
I did a similar thing on Senator's Swiss Army Tool sheath, while I normally don't use flaps or straps, the SAK tool had no real contours for retention, so the strap was needed, to classy it up for him I took a small British coin, put it into a concave piece of metal, set my ball pean hammer down against it and struck the hammer which made the coin become convex/concave so it would "fit" against the snap head nicely.

A little work but in the long run you can put a piece of art on an otherwise ugly spot.
