I'm ready to make an order for more grinder belts. I remember someone saying that there was something better than the ceramic micron belts that I have been using. I just can't find the name of the belts. HELP!
Thanks, Lynn

Ceramic belts, there are a number of good ones
there are the 967 cubitron and the 977 by Norton
and then there are the Norax the mother of all belts
they are the best thing sence sliced bread
Norton makes several hogger belts i like the 967
80 grit they really stand up and cut very well
some use 36 or 50 grit for hogging I just like the
80 grit then into the Norax belts to get the big
scratches of.
I don't know if I hve answered your questions but I hope I have helped
;)

I completely agree with Nathan. For rough grinding you cannot beat the 967 (yellow) cubitron belts. However, they are made by 3M, not Norton. For finishing, I am a complete convert to the Norax belts. I think the largest grit for Norax is about 150. After a lot of experimentation it is my opinion that nothing can compare to these belts for life cycle and overall quality.

My fault,I got the Norax belts mixed up,he is correct they do come from 3M and they are well worth the money.

What a trip, I use the same belts for the same reasons. I do rough grinding in 36, refine it with 60, both 3M ceramic and go through 150, 220, 400, all Norax. I could probably drop the 220 grit altogether.

Hi Dave, Nathan, and Fox,

He guys, I've lurking on this thread...much appreciate the information. I've been thinking about trying to refine my belt choices (I've currently got a large mix of various types) and I think I'll use your suggestions once I use up my current stash of belts. Looks like it'll be Cubitron and Nor belts for my next order. What's the best place to get these from? True-Grit?

:)

Darren
Tru Grit is a good place also Pops supplies' is a good place to get belts
He is a great guy to work with and his prices are good. here is his web page
popsknifesupplies.com

Darren, I use Pop's and Tru-Grit, in no regular order. Both are great to deal with, I like supporting both, and quite frankly, at times, neither has everything I need so I will split my order between them.

Nathan and Fox, thanks for the replies...looks like Pop's and True-Grit will be getting my belt business from now on. Are these guys both small businesses? I really prefer to support the small business whenever possible...

Pop's is.He and his wife run it.I just ordered some 967 from him yesterday. We talked knives for about 45 minutes, and we also spoke about different belts.James is a class act, very humble,I think it feels good to have a supplier be able to talk shop with you.

I just placed my first order with pops about a weak ago. I was very impressed, I got everything within 3 days, and i live in North Dakota. They emailed me an order confirmation, and reduced the price on the belts I ordered. Apperently the web page had not been updated and they charged me less than I initially agreed to pay, then let me know that there would be a price increase in a few weeks on certain products in case I wanted to stock up. Emailed me again when they shipped. Then he emailed me one more time to let me know that he forgot to put some of my stuff in my first shipment and sent the rest of my order the next day. Like I said within 3 days I had everything, and am very happy. I will be ordering everything I can from Pops from now on. The best service I have gotten from any supplier I have dealt with, and I haven't even talked to anyone there yet, only email.

I've always only bought my belts from Tru Grit, who are great guys to deal with too. But all this about Pop's only adds to his already powerful mystique. :D Do you know whether this is still his part time job? If so it makes his service and willingness to talk even more special. I'll give Pop's my next order.

Dave

OK, I get the message! 3M Norax from Pop's or True Grit. From 36 to 400 grit. I assume (always trouble) that 967 is the 3M Norax number? Do these take the place of the Micron belts? Are these the ones that are water proof?
BTW, Pop's is http://www.popsknifesupplies.com/index.html
but I don't have True grit's address.
Thanks, Lynn

Here's Tru Grit's website. Their phone is 909-923-4116. The 967 is the 3M number, Norax belts are made by Norton. Yep, they're the waterproof ones. Good grinding!

Tru Grit is also a husband and wife operation, John and Linda Mallett. Very nice people to deal with, and like Pops, you get the 50 belt price on your belt orders.

Thanks guys for all of the feedback, looks like those two places will be getting my future belt ordering business. I'm going to have to talk to some of the local guys here and see if we can work up some large orders, I wonder if either place gives price breaks on orders of 100, 200, etc... I guess I'll email them both and ask.

So, both Pops and Tru Grit carry the Norax belts? Just wondering, because the Norax belts are not in the Pops catalog.

FWIW,

On the last couple of knives I used TRIZAC belts for everything after the heat treat on S30V. Following pattern:

A100 (200 grit)
Hand rub with 320
A45 (400 grit)
A30 (700)
Hand rub with 800
Hand rub with 1200

Why trizac? Because I can't wear them out. They keep going and going. I did ruin one by using it before heattreat and it loaded up. They cut much slower than SC, but they don't give up on hardened steel. They are also great for sharpening.

Also on 416SS I can go all the way to A16 (1200 grit) and then polish.

Hi Steve,

What's your opinion on Trizact versus Norax belts for finish grinding? Do you feel you are getting much longer life out of the Trizact belts as opposed to Norax? Anyone else have experience with both of these who can relate their experiences as well? Thanks! :)

-Darren

I have used both the trizacts and the norax and to me there is no comparison. The norax have worked way better for me. I wouldn't even consider buying the trizacts anymore. I actually tried out both belts on the same piece of metal, same grit, brand new belts and the trizact seemed like it seriously lacked in comparison.
