Hey Guys,

I need a new belt and I have heard of guys wearing belts that they either use or could use for Stropping if need be. I even have heard guys on this forum talk about working in compounds to the back of the belts that they wear. Anyone have any recommendations for a belt make/model that is good for this?? Simple black or brown design would work for cosmetics. Thanks in advance.

Edit: If there are too many to list maybe just some qualities in a belt that I should look for?

The simpler, the better. Basic brown/tan, veg-tanned cowhide, uncoated (some cheap belts are waxed/coated in plastic). I'd avoid other 'colors', like black, as the tanning method for those might be different (some tanning methods strip many of the natural silicates out of the leather; we want to keep those). With compound, the tanning method and the silicates aren't as much of a factor. That is, UNLESS you choose use part of the belt bare (I do). I use about 12" of the inside (rough) face of my belt with green compound, and also strop on both the bare rough and bare smooth (outside) faces as well. Works pretty well. My preference would be to avoid belts with any extra stitching/embossing/etc, as it just gets in the way.

Here's a stock pic of the type I've been using (got this one from Cabela's):

Thanks a lot. Just the help I was looking for.

You might also see some described as 'bark tanned', which is OK too (essentially the same as veg-tanned; I think some use the terms interchangably). The belt I pictured above was the first one I've deliberately chosen & purchased with stropping in mind. That's when I knew I really had a sickness... :D
