Belt Sander and Grinds

I got the little 1x30 from Harbor Freight and have been experimenting on some cheapos and machetes.

I have some better knives that have convex grinds.

Will using the belt sander on these knives mess up the convex grind?

What grind does a belt sander tend to produce while sharpening?

Thanks.

Speaking of sharpening only, if you use the flat platen to sharpen, it will produce a flat grind. Both edges forming a "V". This is assuming that you are holding steady etc.

If you use the belt in an unsupported section(loose belt), it will produce a convex, or appleseed type edge.

Please note, that the amount of convex is determined by the angle you hold the blade to the belt.

It is very easy to overheat an edge using these methods, so use a light touch, and dip often in a water bucket. ;)
