I was looking at belt grinders yesterday...

Is there a certain type, brand, or power output I should be looking for?

me = cheap, poor

Bruise, mine's a 1 x 42 1/3 HP Kalamazoo Industries sander. Works really well for sharpening and general grinding/sanding.

Not sure about your area, but the Delta SA180 is for sale at Lowe's for $87 right now. You can't find it online for less than $129, some places $199.

The absolute cheapest deal is through Harbor Freight where you can get a 1x30 for around $30 on sale....and they often have free shipping.

I saw a Delta grinder at the local hardware store for 89 bux. Dunno if it's the same model. I check the Home Despot on the way home and maybe looka ata da kraftzmann too.

Thanks for good help.

Everyone at the Convention had Deltas (except for Dan with his fancy KMG, OOOOHHH :p). They were great for sharpening and handle shaping, and the Trizact belts Warren had for his were very nice too. I'm going to get one next month when I move out of this dingy little barracks room. :D

Got a lil' pointy thing in the mail, RR. Thanks! ;)

Let me know when you want the high-speed finger remover sent..... :D :p

There'll be no turning back for you, my friend!

Brusie,

I went with the 1 x 42 kalamazoo because it was american made came with a baldor motor and was convertable to a hroziontal edge grinder without much work.

I really like the unit especially after modifying it for horizontal grinding. It's great for sharping and handle shaping and finish grinding. Although if I did it again I'd go with at least a 2 x 42 since I've started to get into knife making and bigger & more powerful is better for shaping.

Tim :D :D :D

That's the idea. :D I've already found a .357 to keep us all safe at night. Unfortunately the store has this crazy idea that I should pay money for it. :grumpy: They do have layaway though. About the finger-remover, I'll let you know once I'm settled. Glad the pointy thingie made it there OK. :)

I don't usually recommend the kalamazoo unless the person is willing to lay down some cash. They're usually $150-200. Add another $50-100 and you can get a grizzly 2x72...see what I mean?

I wish the price was better, because I do believe the kalamazoo is a better machine than the Delta and others, etc.

I have a 1x30 harbor but may upgrade to a 1x42.

I can't seem to find any of the really fine grit belts for a 1x30.

Also something you all may be able to enlighten me on, but the say 600 grit belt sanding belt seems to have rougher grit than a peice of 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Is this just a brand thing or am I missing something??

Bruise - I've got one of the Deltas...may need to move up to a Griz since I still have all of my fingers and both eyes.

(Don't worry about the kidney I'm saving for you, it's on the side away from the belt!)

I thought the narrower belt would be better for getting at the curvy side of a khuk. Is this not true? How does one do this with a 3" belt? 6" belt? I can't imagine using that on the curves of a khuk.

I doubt I have enough $ for one of thems fancy ones, unless I can find a coupon. :D

Don't know...mine's the 1" model. It does do everything I need though. You can't imagine how easy it is to bring the edge up to *look out!*

I just asked Ysva and he told me you could run a smaller belt on the grizzly,
and that he does it for those "special times" .

I'm lookin too.....

You can buy 1" belts for any size grinder. That's why the 2" (and up) wide grinders are more versatile. However, it's more money upfront. Just a trade off.

ah so...

I doubt I'll ever need anything larger than 1" though.

Will I be able to find a manicure attachment?

Thanks for good help... :)

You'll get some fancy manicures using that baby, alright. The 1" is a very good, easy to use entry level sander. Very versatile. Go get one right now, Bruise. Get some safety glasses too. And good leather work gloves. And a big box of Band-aids. :)

The sander that I saw at the Hardewarez store was the Delta150. It has 1/4 hp as opposed to the Delta180.

Will there be a noticeable difference betwixt the two whilst grinding?

If I were a better mechanic I'd make a V8 grinder.

At least I'll be able to say... "they forced me to buy one". This absolves me of any responsibilty. :D
