Belt sander meets Khukri

So my local Harbor Freight finally had one of their little $30 belt sanders in stock. I went by at lunch of Friday and was so excited, I took the rest of the day off! My M43 and Heather's AK are scary choppers  The M43 had almost flat bevels and maybe 1/5 of an in at the edge was convexed by hand. Now the entire bevel is evenly convexed. I took it to 120 grit on the sander and then polished by hand up to 600 grit on both the blades. I just THOUGHT they were sharp before. I haven't done the YCS yet, but it's on the list! All my kitchen knives are scary too...

Wanted to get some advice on doing the YCS from some of you who have belt sanders. I'm going to convex the YCS and one of the kardas. The other I want to put a scandi grind on. Any advice on doing this? I'm going by hand as the table only rotates to 45 degrees. How do I keep the bevels straight? Just go slow and light?

I'd think to get a good scandi edge you'd want to use files. That tiny sander isn't the greatest tool for a perfectly straight grind.

Those little 30" Belt sanders are nice! I have a Delta 30x5 and have sharpened plenty of Khukuris on it. Convexed the edge on my JKM-1 a while back. That blade is over 1/4" Thick but cuts like crazy now.

Can we see some pictures of you guys using your freshly sharpened blades?

Ok. I put a convex edge on my Ang Khola using a Harbor Freight sander. It chops and splits very well.

Horn Dog, thanks for the pictures. That AK looks good. How are you liking the handle Mods?
