Belt Sander on Machete??????

They work great, get some belts from leevally and have some fun.

What knifenut said, I just did one the other day, ended up with a nice even convex grind:thumbup:

Is 320 grit really enough though? I guess if not, where do you guys get higher grit belts? Seems it is worth a shot at $40 or so.

Heres what made me get a Harbor Freight belt sander. A word of caution, once you start down this slope watch out scary sharp edges are just a few seconds away. this was originally posted by Jerry Hossom, it really works well. (after a little practice) http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4916570&postcount=78. for some reason the post for the compound at Pops Knife supply does not work here is the compound link http://popsupply.bizhosting.com/matchless_buffing_compounds.html. If you follow Jerry's advice this system works great. You should be able to put all this together for right around a 100 dollars.

Thanks a bunch for that info! Seems like a simple and cheap way to sharpen knives. Is the speed of the grinder that big of a deal? Having a variable switch would be a nice feature, but doesn't seem all that common.

It would be nice if the grinder would run a little slower, especially with the lower grit belts. The lower grit belts will build heat very quickly (thats why you need the bucket of water.) If you watch what you are doing and take your time and dunk the blade after every pass you will be fine. The best advice I can give you is get some cheap knives and practice practice practice. After several knives you will be shocked at how easy it is.

I've been thinking about getting this sander, too. Let me know how it works out :D

That would work just fine. try taking it to where the edge rolls and then hit some 15-30 micron paper to take it off.

Could always just do this by hand to save some time changing belts.

In any case, this does sound like a really interesting setup. I already have paper wheels which work very well, though seems like another useful tool. Both are a lot faster than doing it completely by hand like I've been doing. Won't be buying any of this for a couple of weeks. Will see how easy or hard it may be to wire in a variable switch.
