First of all, hello everyone. I have been following the forum for many years, finally I have some free space in my yard for working. I would like to make a good quality belt sander sharpener for myself.
But there are a lot of problems ahead of me, unfortunatelly I don't have many motor options because I don't live in the United States.
Here is a chart from motor company;

1) Which mono motor would you recommend, similar to the motor speed I shared on bottom? (Mostly I work on bowie knives, which has a 5-6 mm thick spine with 1.5 or 2 mm post heat treat edge for sharpening)
and this one
2) I plan to make it size of 1 x 30. In this case, what size of aluminium wheel set I should look for it?
3) I have read that the speed control is harmful to the engine, I have no idea what to do in this situation. I already only found a cheap made speed control unit, I have no alternative. So in this case constant speed motor might be better choice.
Thanks everyone, Regards.

1/2HP is all you will need for sharpening on a simple machine like that. A 4 pole motor is what you want.

3Phase motors are available worldwide, usually cheaper than single phase. A VFD and 3phase motor will allow the sharpener to be slowed down as needed to finish the edges without overheating the blade. In 1/2HP both should be reasonable if bought online from a place like ebay. Even new they shouldn't be too expensive.

I take it you have a larger grinder already, since you are making knives? If so, why not just make a jig for that grinder? I made one out of Tormek parts, works great.

Thanks for the help, unfortunately I don't have a 3phase connection at my house. In this case, I am thinking of buying a monophase motor suitable for the European home socket with the features you mentioned. In this case, is it okay to buy 4 poles of 0.37 Kw, 1/2 - 1420 RPM (or 1500) monophase motor?

Thanks for advice, I'm just doing it for hobby purposes, I realized that I was occupying my friend's workshop and his belt grinder, and for courtesy I'm not going there anymore. I plan to buy myself a constant speed belt grinder soon, the ones with the speed driver are way beyond my budget.

You can buy a 3 phase motor and connect it to a 3 phase to 1 phase VFD (various frequency drive = speed control). This means you could plug it in a normal 220v outlet. I suggest you check salus grinders from Poland. They have small grinders for really decent money. Hard to beat the price by building yourself. Or buy Metabo BS175 to start with. Buying a decent motor, VFD, wheels and other parts isn't going to be cheaper.
