i just finished building my variable speed grinder. i'm tuning it now. any tips on tuning it so that the belt tracks correctly? i've been trying to shim the wheels until they are perfectly co planar, and not titlted. any tips are welcome, thanks in advance.

Magnum.44,

There are a couple of ways to square up your machine. Is it two or three wheels, and is it setting on a fairly flat surface.?? Have you got a long straight edge or a 24" carpenter square?

Heck yea I invented it ...What is it???
I only do what the voices in my wifes head tell me to do.
It's kinda like hangin, you never get used to it.

it's a two wheel machine, like the burr king. but also has a platen on it, with a wheel above the platen. i've got a straight edge.. it's a bigger machine than the normal 2"x72", becuase it uses a 3"x132" belt. i've got the tracking pretty good, but the only problem is the belt wonders slightly, how do i fix that?

Magnum,

Do you have a good crown on the tracking wheel, also does it run out at the crown true. Do you have a way to possibly put a dial indicator on it and make sure the crown is running true. A couple of other things that could affect the drifting of the belt is the run out of the the contact wheel, the belt and the tension of the takeup for belt slack.
That is a monster of a grinder and sounds cool. If the run out of the contact wheel and crown on the tracking wheel are good I would play with the tension. That is a lot of belt running between two wheels. Let me know about the crown and go from there.

the wheels are all custom made bader wheels, and i watched them running. the crown should be true, since bader has been doing this for a while. the only wheel that's crowned is the idler wheel.
today i tried to get rid of some of the movement in the back arm by putting some lateral tension on it, that worked in taking some of the vibration out of it. could vibration in the arms and platen be causing the belt wonder?
i have a burr king tension unit, so i can put a pretty lot of tension on the belts if i need too. i don't have any experience is tensioning big belts though. i'll try messing with the tension.
A.T. i'll keep your suggestion in mind, thanks. have you tried it? how good does it work?
thanks for helping, i appreciate it.

the burr king grinder is a 2"x72", but i see no reason why the tensioner unit would be under tensioning. becuase i can't click it back very far. i've got plenty of room to tension more, i'm just afraid of overtensioning. should i try tensioning it while it's running slow, so that i can see if it's getting better.
a.t. i tried the tape thing, but it didn't do anything, i went around 3 times, should i try more since the belt is wider than the average belt?

Magnum,

If you are getting any vibration something is wrong. If you can clamp up something between the two wheels that will dampen the bottom of the top belt and put a little tension on it and see if the vibration leaves. you can use a pipe or rod for a temp check. If it works thank about adding a permenant flat idler wheel.
Is there any way to get a pic to help.

Scott
