I am sure that is has already been posted somewhere, but what do you suggest for an entry level belt sander. I can't right now spend more than about $150 right now. Just wondering what you suggest I should get. I have not been able to find one, but I would also look at a used one, if it was local, or shipping was not much.

In that price range, the Sears 2 x 42 comes to mind. Retail is closer to 250 - 300 but it goes on sale several times per year at or close to your price range. Many of us started with one. It isn't a full knife making grinder, but belts last longer than the little 1 x 30 rigs, it has an 8" disc that is useful and the power, while not great is way above the smaller units as well. I have a used one I'd sell to you but Alberta is a long way from Texas. I'm sure there are more on the forum.

It needs to be said. While it will do a respectable job, you won't be happy with it for long. Consider saving for a 2 x 72 grinder.

I've had an $89 Harbor Freight 4/36 belt sander with 6"disc for 17 years and still use it all the time. I'd look at those too. For the money they are not bad at all.

I went to sears yesterday, and they had a 2x72" sander with 6" disc combo. for $70.
I picked up a 2005-2006 catalog, and they list the same sander for $99.99.
I went to their sight, and could not find it anywhere, but then again you would be lucky to find anything on their sight! :barf:

The catalog # is 0921513 if you want to try to find it, or take the item # to your local sears to see if they have it.

I looked at it, and really liked it, there are just other tools I need more right now.

I guess that is a typo. it is a 2x42".
I saw on another forum where Sears was closing them out, and at their location they were $59.

I would like to add my two cents......

6x48 would do it and a auto body grinder...... Use the AB grinder to rough shape the blade then clean it up on the 6X48. Cheap way..... and will produce great blades, you do not need a 2 inch... a 6 inch platen would also help you straighten your blades some....

look on my website and you will see a design for a 2x72, I get alot of my parts from Rob to build my own and I am no tool and die maker by any means. check out the one I built out of the I beam.....LOL...... Rob is a great guy and will help you on parts....

you do not need much to turn out a great knife.....

I know a few beginners that started with the 2 X 42 Sears. To improve the plunge cuts I would advise in adding a piece of Pyrocrem (sp) or what I did for them was to add 2" x 6" of hardened precision ground O-1 to the platen. Good luck
