so im looking to get a small belt sander, im just going to use it to sharpen my knives, i know they have 1 at my work that i use when i close on the night shift but thats the only time i can use it and i was wondering what one osts where you can get it and such.

the 1 at my job is about the size of a cable box in terms of length and width and probablly 8-10 inches high (measurements are probablly terribly wrong lol) but it has an area of sandpaper (not sure if it is but it feels like a really fine grit sand paper) and the aera that is open is probablly like 5 inches long and 4 inches wide and they use it to sharpen the produce knives (witch are scary sharp, i cut entire heads of asparagus and broccoli like butter)

Does anyone know what something like this would cost or idk i need all info im kinda in the dark on this lol

you might get more helpful tips from the knife makers subforum, hit the triangle in the bottom right of your post and it'll contact one of the mods

okay thanks, because i have the stuff and the ability to sharpen properly and if i just hone on ceramic my blade doesnt get dull but its so much easier to go zzzz zzz zzzzzz zzzz zzzz and have it be razer sharp

sounds like your just about ready for some power sharpening then, there's a great guy on here called Richard J. He has amazing tips on how to do paper wheel sharpenings and I think they will translate relatively well.

I got one at Harbor freight for $35, 1x30" you'll have to get belts online though as they only have up to about 200-400 in store, I just bought some 250 (for reprofiling), 600, 800, 1000, and a leather belt with some compound, cost me about $60 overall and makes sharpening/reprofiling anything from S90V to ZDP-189 take a couple minutes instead of half an hour-2 hours on stones.

so will like any belt sander work if i go to like a hardware store? and then just get some fine grit belts for it?

I've been using mine for the last year and half with great results, if its just for sharpening its really all you need, I would upgrade to something more powerful/higher quality if I planned on making knives or maybe doing lots of regrinds, but for just simple maintenance/sharpening/reprofiling its all you need really.

yea and i dont even plan to use it a ton cause i usually touch up on ceramic at the end of the day so it never really dulls but i just want something good incase i need a really quick sharpen, once i get a bit more cash ill have to order that, did u get the belts from habor freight too or somewhere else?

Yup. Harbor Freight sander and sharpening belts from Lee Valley or TruGrit

I suggest a 40 grit Klingspor, 80 grit 3M Trizact, 40 micron 3M, and 9 micron 3M. Between those you have a good set to thin or re-establish edges as well as polish them up.

fyi if you hang around the maintenance and tinkering forum you'll pick up a lot on sharpening of all sorts. If you want something a bit more idiot proof than a belt sander take a look at the work sharp knife and tool sharpener. I've heard good things about it and it'll certainly put an edge on a knife in very little time.

Another vote for the work sharp. Me personally, I use the cheap HF also then go to the stones.

Personally I don't see any advantage to the Worksharp over the HF sander other than the guide, which I wouldn't use anyway. But that's just me.

im not gonna sharpen my knife to a razor edge with the belt sander, i just want it to put the like step before the razor edge, i still like my ceramic rods for a razor edge

get a leather belt for your sander and you'll like it more than your ceramic sticks I'm fairly sure.
