If everything works out, I will soon have a 2X72 grinder. I have an almost new (free) 1 hp, TEFC, 3450 rpm, 1.15sf motor.
With the step pullys on hand, I can get a speed range of 5900fpm,3470fpm, and 1422fpm. These seem too fast to me.
I am greatful for any suggestions.

I grind about 6000 ft/min but that is with a 7.5HP motor, you may find that at the highest speed you will lose torque and the motor will stall out.

You will probably have to stick with the 3450 speed.

I grind at 5450 fpm, but my motor is a high torque 2 hp dc motor. I can slow the motor a little while grinding, but haven't ever stalled it. I have stalled 1 horse motors easily at high speeds. I'd say that the 3450 speed would probably be the best for that motor.

A lot of guys like to grind slow to save belts as well, but I don't make that many knives compared to other things, and so when I make one, it's to make money, so speed is my friend.
