Belt Stud Sheath Question

How is a belt stud sheath inteneded to be worn? Are you supposed to just tuck it into your belt, and the stud is to keep the sheath from falling out the bottom, or is there supposed to be a frog that you put the sheath into and slide on your belt?

One problem I see with the first method is if the knife is a tight fit, the sheath tends to come out with the knife, which I find annoying.

I've been wondering this for a while, and now that there is a :cool:sheath forum:cool::thumbup: I figured I'd ask it there.

The answer to all your questions is Yes. Without the frog it simply slides under the belt or "sash" and is kept from sliding through by the stud. these are referred to by some including me as a Sash sheath. With a frog, the frog is generally held in place by the stud and also has a belt loop for vertical wear. I think I posted one here yesterday showing the same sheath with and without the frog.

edited to add: Yep I did. Link to that thread in this forum is below.

Beautiful work, Paul!!! I make the belt stud style sheaths, but out of Concealex (Southern Comforts). A lot of my clients are interested in concealed carry, so the frog is not used. Knife/sheath is worn IWB with untucked shirt, and a very large knife can disappear in just shorts and t-shirt. Here's a couple pics.

The "stud" sheath that is commonly seen now-a-days was not the intended use in the beginning. The stud was used for attaching the frog.

In order to prevent the sheath from being withdrawn with the knife, a very simple solution takes care of that annoyance. Place a second stud below the first at a distance to accept the width of the belt. With a stud above and below the belt the problem is solved.

There is no problem of the sheath being withdrawn with the knife if the sheath is tensioned properly - leather or thermoplastic. Bill Bagwell's leather sheaths are tensioned so that after a break-in period of wearing the knife/sheath of about two weeks, the sheath releases the knife with ease from concealment or casual behind the belt wear. Concealex and kydex sheaths can have the proper tension set with no break-in period. It's a little tricky to accomplish, and you have to know the feel you are looking for, but absolutely doable. No frog or double stud system needed.
