Belt tracking question

Hi guys,

My home built grinder is almost done. I was testing the tracking last night. When the belt runs downward (away from me) the tracking is good, if I reverse the direction the belt starts moving towards the edge of the pulleys. I am sure if all 4 pulleys were aligned 100% - which they don't - the direction in which the belt rotating would not matter.

I wonder, do those who own a pro built grinder like a KMG experience this, or those grinders track perfect in both direction ?

Also, is there a reason why you would want to reverse rotation on a grinder ?

Thank you.

Henrik

It is nice to be able to reverse a DISC grinder, but not a belt grinder.

The belts themselves are designed to run in a particular direction.

You should want debris flying down, and not up into your face.

If you search this site, people describe grinding with the blade edge either up or down (preference), but thats a separate issue.

Henrik, Richard has made a good point about running the belt grinder backwards,

With that said, the answer to your question is no. The KMG doesn't track worth a darn in reverse. It might track well enough to do some gentle sharpening on top with the belt running away from you....but there is really no response from any tracking adjustments and under heavyloads, the tension arm will compress due to the increased tension on the top of the grinder...as the belt is pulled over the top by the driv wheel while being held on the front by the workpiece.

I'm not sure if I made any sense...Hope this helps...

Good luck with your project,

-Rob

Mine tracks in reverse all right, at least at lower RPMs.
Some folx use it to sharpen the edge, that's about it.

Not much fun for anything else, with grit flying up into
yer face :)

There was a guy here about a year ago who suggested to me that I wrap my contact wheel with some tape in the middle , to help keep the belt centered.
