Yep, In my opinion a 1"X30" is a waste of time for grinding steel. Good for handles or sharpening. A 2"X42" is a big upgrade. Not the best but a better starter grinder than the other.

also, how do I get my belts to stop clogging up with metal filings?

If you find that answer, let us know. Belt cleaning sticks are good for cleaning out build up. I also have heard of people using the sole of an old sneaker, but to keep it from clogging in the first place.

The only way to keep it from clogging is not to use it,keep a belt dressing stick handy and use it often.
