Hey all. Where is a good source of decent belts for a Harbor freight 1x30 sander? Are the HF belts OK? Got one from Santa and can't wait to tinker... Recommendations on good grits to have are appreciated as well.
Thanks

For stock removal, the zirconium oxide belts from www.customsandingbelts.com are affordable and high quality. The zirconium belts from www.leevalley.com are high quality, too. For general shaping of the edge, the zirconium belts and aluminum oxide belts work great (closed coat aluminum oxide cut faster, but it's already very fast at this point, anyways). For polishing up the edge, you have a dazzling array of choices. It's very common to use some grinding belts from www.leevalley.com up to 1200 grit and then finish with a leather sanding belt (from Lee Valley, www.jantzsupply.com , and many others) loaded with some sort of polishing compound (a big, green bar of chromium oxide and aluminum oxide is popular as are various diamond-based pastes). I like using a worn-down 600 grit silicon carbide belt from www.customsandingbelts.com before using a leather polishing belt.

Good luck!

On the cheap. I've gotten away with just a 320 and a 600 belt then I used the back of the belt to polish after the 600. Worked just fine. But if ordering belts get a few of many grits. I think my coarseest is a 36 then I just moved up by doubling the grit and getting that grit belt. exsample 120 = 240 so I got a 220 belt. then 320 , 600 ,1200 you get the idea. Do get a few of the real coarse belts because your going to want to make a knife or make something very soon after you start playing with the grinder. :)

I got all my belts for the 1 by 30 at lee valley. The HF belts are good for lawnmower blades or practice.
