Ben in India

jest last week. popped in, then was gone again. Perhaps a few lines of epic Anglo-Saxon poetry would draw him out?:D;):D

Keith

Seems like Beowulf is a bit overdone in AS, so perhaps excerpts from _The Wayfarer?_ Or some selections from Sweet's Anglo Saxon Reader?

Keith

I once knew a gal from Calcutta
She'd let you know quick
If she'd let ya

Uh...nevermind...wrong kind of epic Anglo-Saxon poetry.

Reminds me of the limericks:

"There once was a man from Nantucket"

and

"There once was a lady from Niger"

Gotta google for the rest as kids might be looking :D

I've also been thinking about Ben the last few days. Hope he is doing well and enjoying himself. Would love to hear what he's up to.

Tir biþ tacna sum, healdeð trywa wel wiþ æþelingas;
a biþ on færylde ofer nihta genipu, næfre swiceþ.

(Tiw is a guiding star; well does it keep faith with princes;
it is ever on its course over the mists of night, and never fails.)

Now if you look really sideways at some of those words, you'll see the roots of our language:

wiþ=with (þ is called thorn, and it is a Th sound)
ofer=over
nihta=night
næfre=never

You can also see some of the root of the modern German language:
biþ(bith)=From the root for "is, to be" e.g, Du bist (you are), Ich bin (I am)

Keith

yikes....I can see those characters....do I have a special font installed or are those regular symbols?

they are part of the extended ASCII charset.

Eth (ð) and thorn (þ) are similar characters in sound.
þ - Thorn is the "Th" sound in "thing" (non-voiced 'Th' sound
ð - Eth is the "Th" sound in "this" (considered a 'dTh' sound)

Yes, I'm still here in India. Surviving - some rough times on money, relationship and other fronts -- but very much enjoying being here. Though I would like to get to the Hindustan part of India actually (northern India: e.g. Delhi, etc.). Working on getting an Indian student visa to be able stay longer here. Gave a series of lectures on the history of English verbal constructions at the Linguistics Dept. of NEHU (Northeastern Hill University, the local university) this past month.

Not that much more to report at the moment. Still trying to learn Hindi & Nepali. And working, slowly, on an Hindi translation of Beowulf!

best to all - hope all is well - I haven't been able to check in that much here lately
