Anyone have a brand name or model they can recommend for a light-duty bench grinder for knives?

Something with a wide range of speeds suitable for knife work?

I'm not opening up a shop or anything, so it doesn't have to be super heavy duty.
Thanks in advance, I hope someone can assist me with this choice.

Sears has a variable speed Craftsman bench grinder that they put on sale quite often for like $75. I'm sure you can find one cheaper but most are single speed. Harbour freight might have something? If you aren't hogging off a lot of metal and stressing it, it should last for a long time even if a cheaper unit.

That being said I wouldn't use those grit wheels that are typically on bench grinders. The paper wheels work great for sharpening though.

if you're going to be using a grinder for making knives the one from harbor freight or sears would work great. if you just want to put a set of paper wheels on it then find a 1/2 hp motor.
snowalker, you should check into the paper wheels. a buddy who has a tormek had me touch up some knives and wood chisels that he just sharpened on his tormek. he was amazed at the difference between before and after.
