bench grinder question...

i don't see bench grinders discussed much here - the ones with abrasive grinding wheels...i use mine quite a bit to rough out the shape of a blade after forging (since i what i make in the forge tends to resemble a grossly misshapen lawnmower blade more so than a knife blade) and before heading to the sanding belts...

i have a 6" grinder but am itching to buy another power tool and those 8" grinders look appealing...but i'm wondering if there's any point...are there any advantages to an 8" other than a bit more surface area for grinding and longer-lasting wheels?

I use bench grinders exclusively for grinding my blades. Its the only tool I can afford right now that will do an 8" hollow grind.

I started on a borrowed 6" and went to 8" when I bought my own. There is a big difference. The grinding wheels are wider for one thing, a full inch instead of 3/4". They cut faster because the motor has the same shaft speed (3450rpm) but the wheel has 2" more diameter = lots more surface speed. Generally you get a little more clearance between the wheel and the motor also.
