i cannot seem to find any bench top drill presses with a 4 inch travel, or stroke for drilling hidden tangs. most are around 3 inches. any suggestions ? thank you.

Going to have to go with a floor model.

Or, get 5" bits, drill the first 2.5", raise the platform up so the bit is bottomed out and drill another 2.5"

I think you're going to have to get a large full size model for that much travel. I just checked the manual on my jet 20" and if this is the correct stat it does go over 4".

Spindle Travel: 4 5/8"

Yep this is what I've always done. Figured that is what everybody did.

I have a very large Delta benchtop drill press that has 6" of travel. It was made for the military and I got it from a guy who got it from an auction. It's a very rare model I guess. It was a huge PITA to get the instruction manual for it. Delta's regular customer service didn't have it. They had to give me the number of an old timer who had all the files/manuals for their machines. He was a great guy and went to the trouble to scan off part of the manual for me.

If I was you, I would go for a floor model. Mine is so big that I had to reinforce my bench so it would hold it. I got mine for a really good price($300) otherwise I would have got a floor model. Once you get into more powerful drill press's, they get HEAVY. I had to take mine apart to get it down into my shop.

Here's a pic:

Yeah, I've looked and can't find anything bench-top with 4". I'm actually on my way to Lowes to pick up the "PORTER-CABLE 8-Amp 12-Speed Floor Drill Press." Not a bad unit, $319 gets a 1HP motor and 4" spindle travel. I had a modified HF drill press that I put a 1HP motor on that I used for a few years, but it kept warping the spindle when I would drill 1-1/4" holes in stainless with a hole saw. Hopefully the Porter Cable has a heavier duty spindle.
