Hi All! I was wondering if anyone has removed the AO spring on this knife? Also made it shed some weight? I would like know as I'm considering doing it to my 581. Thanx

I have but it is one heck of a puzzle to put back together. Prepare an organized setup to contain the tiny parts and break it down slowly. Puttin the spring back in is even trickier.

Good Luck,
Dalton

I have as well, and I much prefer it without the spring assist, now it's just a very smooth axis lock, and only takes one hand to close

I don't have any problem closing mine one-handed. :)

I wasn't interested in modifying mine but I was curious how it worked so I searched videos on youtube. I found some that showed how to remove the spring.

I removed mine once, for cleaning. Then reassembled it. The second time I took it apart, I left the spring out and like it better that way. To answer your weight question, no it doesn't weigh any less to speak of.

Do you guys know if the pivot can be adjusted? This was a major reason I didn't go for one.
The pivot can be adjusted, and mine has stayed where I put it. I add a little blue threadlocker.

I have only adjusted mine twice since 8-16-2009. And that was during the spring removal. It never developed side to side play.

Thanks. So is the pivot screw hidden under the bolster or something?

I pulled the AO spring out of mine within a few days of getting it. without the AO, my 581 is the smoothest opening Benchmade I have ever used, it flips open and closed really easily (I can pull back the axis lock and the blade will fall from gravity alone).

Both bolsters come off really easily, underneath the left one is the pivot screw. If youre interested in seeing one opened up, I could take some photos.
