Does anybody have both of these, or have handled both of these, and do you feel that the original is worth double the Taiwan version? Also, do you like it as an edc, or do you leave it in a drawer? Would you rather have another small locking blade (SLB, Mouse , whatever) instead?

The Benchmite II is identical in quality to the original, but the materials aren't as high quality. Does an AUS8 blade bother me on a 2 inch knife? I'm not going to be tearing down limbs here.

Also, the anodizing job on some Benchmites is BEAUITFUL. That's going away on the II.

Despite its red class, the Benchmite II is a Benchmade.

However, the Benchmite is getting discontinued, so it may become collectable...

If I were wealthier, I would have bought the original. I'm not, but if you happened to have a lot of money to burn, don't be frugal.

my freind has a Benchmite, and I got my dad a Benchmite 2 for Chrismas.

They are virtually the same quality as far as I can tell. The orginal has better blade steel and the back is differrent. It is solid on the Benchmite 2 and it has a fancy pattern cut through it on the original. Other than that they are really exactly the same. The blade shape is a little different, and personally I like the shape of the BM 2 blade a little better. As far as function goes I don't think you will notice a difference between the two knives.

No if it where me, personally, I would spend even more and get the auto version, but that is just me.

I don't think the original is worth double of the 2 though.

I have a Benchmite(an auto) and have seen and played with the Benchmite II Besides the new blade materiel the new Benchmites lack the cool CNC machineing, the beautiful annodization, and a rather ugly blade shape. The new Benchmite however is about 1/3 the price of the old one so its kind of a toss-up.

It's a tiny little gent's knife that's still a real cutter, but definitely gives it up in ergonomics. It's not badly designed, just so small it's hard to hold well for me. The original is a much gentier gent, the II is much cheaper.

For a small user/EDC, I'd look at your other options, like the Mouse. My personal choice in that arena went to a limited edition BM 770, but that's a price bump - I thought it was worth it for very gentish gent that still had working ergonomics and a blade long enough to have a decent range of work - to me the difference between 2" and 2.75" is pretty significant. Not as significant as a handle I could actually do work with, but given both I'm quite happy that the 770 gave me the knife I paid for.

I got my cousin one of the first Benchmites for his wedding present. Limited run and all that. Numbered somewhere like 53/1000. It was a nice knife. I'm glad to hear that the new red class ones are okay. They looked pretty shisty on BM's website.
