I just bought a Benchmade 1000 Auto Boguszewski Spike. The knife is in nearly new shape. Push the button and the blade opens with authority. It's hard to describe how hard and fast the blade opens. It's awesome. The previous owner stated that the knife has been stored open to preserve the spring. I don't have a good way to store it open and I would prefer to store it closed. Is storing it long term with the blade closed going to be an issue? Benchmade's warranty is so awesome that I wouldn't be worried about it but this is an old knife are they going to have parts for something this old if it ever becomes an issue?

What's your recommendation?

myth and a really dumb one that just wont seem to die off. well made springs wear out from repeated open and close cycles, not sitting closed.

if that had any truth to it at all the makers would ship them open so when they sat in a distributors warehouse or dealers shelves for years they didnt degrade. they dont do that, cause it isnt needed.

i have autos leaf and coil springs that have sat closed for over a decade and still work fine. no degrade of power.

That's great to hear. I store my semi-auto pistols and rifle with loaded magazines because I never really cared if it had an effect on the springs in the magazines. Good to know that it's only a myth.

I think the reason it won't die off is that deformation via creep is a real, mechanical effect when materials experience a constant stress over an extended time.

However, it also tends to be pretty temperature dependent. Effects at room temp on steel tend to be small and not continuous; temperatures need to be a more significant fraction of the metal's melting point before creep really becomes an issue.

So... if you're designing a boiler or some sort of steam pressure vessel, yes, definitely take it into account. For springs on things that aren't going to get any hotter than we would, like you say, creep is a non-issue and total number of cycles is the real upper limit.

Yeah you won't have any issues storing the blade closed. Like already stated the springs fail due to repeated cycles.

I have an original auto Spike that I was given in 90's and it has been closed for years because I never carried it or used it. The spring is extremely stout, the knife will jump out of your hands when opening if you aren't careful.

I bought a NIB Spike a couple months ago. It sat in its box for years closed. It will jump out of your hand if you're not paying attention!
Such a cool knife!

I didn't get the box with mine but it looks new or really close to it. It is a cool knife. I am so glad that I was able to get one. Mine is the gray, I think I like the black a little more but the gray looks really nice.

The Benchmade model 1000 Auto Spike was a Phil Boguszewski design. Benchmade also did non-auto folders in virtually the same design. They did models 640 & 650 which were extremely nice folders. I've had all of them at one time and I EDCed my model 640 for quite a long time and I really enjoyed that folder and I very much wish that Benchmade would bring back the Boguszewski Spike models in newer/better blade steel and even a new handle material as well.

But the Auto-Spike is without a doubt the best automatic I ever owned. Like the other guys said it would literally jump out of your hand if you were not holding it firmly. With Phil Boguszewski passing away a few years back I'm hoping at some point that Benchmade will do Sprint Runs of all 3 of these great designs.

The Boguszewski designs were truly classics.
