Benchmade 15030 Small Bone Collector, is this a warranty issue?

Hey, I just picked up a nib Benchmade 15030 Small Bone Collector off the exchange here, and so far I really like it. The G10 handle texturing is awesome, and it looks like they learned from the Rifts sharp edges, and rounded them up, making it a very very comfy knife in hand. The higher weight actually makes it feel much tougher, as opposed to poorly made.

One problem though. One of the scales is not flush with the liner. The gap is large enough that I can easily see straight through to the other side. Also, the small metal piece that is usually on each side (believe its part of the Omega Spring that makes up the Axis Lock) is not even. Its all the way forward in its groove on the flush scale, but about halfway back on the scale with the gap. Does this mean the Spring might be busted? The lock does feel a little weird compared to my other Benchmades. I am including some pics to try to show what I mean a little better:

I apologize for the bad pics, don't have the best photography skills.

So should I try to send this in for warranty? Because I picked it up in a trade, I don't have a receipt, so I am not sure if they would even do anything about it. Or should I try removing the scale from the liner and see if I can reattach it so that its flush, and the spring is in the proper slot? Any suggestions on a way to fix it?

It should follow the knife, so I think you are covered. That doesn't look right at all...send it in or return it to the member you got it from if it was a recent trade.

I wouldn't do anything to the blade yourself as of yet. Call Benchmade in the morning, or email them, with these pictures. They're quite good at getting back to you from what I've had to contact them on. You don't need the original receipt as far as I know. I know someone who had work done on an old, discontinued Benchmade that he had got from another without one.

Good luck, contact them before doing anything, disassembly will void warranty!

Hmm, well ty for the tips , but I managed to fix it. I got a thin needle into the gap, and used it to pull out the Omega Spring. It basically was not seated in its little hole properly on the messed up side. I dragged it into the proper slot, and it popped right into it. I then tightened up the screws on that side, and now its properly flush, and opens and closes much smoother. Still a lil messed up that it came that way, but at least it was an easy fix. I wanted to take this with me on a trip I am going on very soon, and I had gone for overnight shipping to make sure it got here in time. Would have been very very upset if I immediately had to send it in for warranty service and couldn't take it with me. Now I just need to clean some gunk outta one of the handle screws, dunno whats in it, but its keeping my Torx from fitting into the screw properly.

I just hope this doesn't mean that despite being "nib" someone had taken it apart previously and put it back together badly, thus voiding the warranty before I even got it. I have never had to actually use warranty service for my knives, but I like knowing that its there to back me up just in case.

Wow! That looks bad. Send it in. Did the seller let you know it had that issue? Is the blade centered?

Well the seller said they had not opened the box if I remember correctly, so they might not have known about it. Gonna give the benefit of the doubt for now. :)

As far as blade centering, thats what actually brought my attention to it. I noticed the blade was pushed up against the side with the non flush liner. After fixing it, the blade seems to be centered just fine.

Glad it was an easy fix but if it would have been me I would have probably sent it into BM to avoid making the warrenty void. Glad its fixed though.

Just curious for those saying the warranty is void, how do you think they would know the knife was taken apart?

If the knife is put together and the screws aren't all stripped out, they will have absolutely no idea. They say that so they don't continually get bags of parts because people can't get their knife back together. Even if you send in a bag of parts they will fix it for you, they just charge your 20 bucks to do it.

What he said.

Didnt open the box? thats total BS. I would suggest trying to get your trade back, and if they refused I think they deserve some negative feedback. I respect you giving them the benefit of the doubt. I certainly would not.

I have knives that I have bought multiple of that I have not looked at the knife. Some are LE and if something is wrong then I will send it in when necessary. I traded away 2 of the M4 701 that the only time they came out of the box is when I took a picture of the knife. Not everyone gropes every knife they get. I had another 710 to grope and I never warmed up to it which is why the others were gotten rid of. I wanted to like them but with my M4 Rift I have a much better knife IMO.

But more than likely they knew about it and didn't want to deal with sending it in and just traded it.
