Somehow I like Benchmade 154cm better than Spyderco vg10.The edge just seems to have more bite in it.It also performs just little better for my uses.Maybe I am wrong, but would like to hear other peoples opinions.

What stones are you using to sharpen?
How is each edge finished?
What are you cutting?

BM's 154cm is tough stuff but in my experience it likes to be sharpened on a coarse stone. I sharpen my stryker on a 300-ish grit India stone and finish with a wooden strop coated it some green compound. VG-10 is on the opposite side of the spectrum, it favors high refinement and gets very sharp quickly. I usually finish on my 3k or 5k waterstone then stron on green compound. I find the edge retention to be much better with a high polish on VG-10.

I have a minigrip in 154cm and a delica 4 in vg10 and i like benchmade's 154cm alot more. I sharpen both knives exactly the same and i feel that the 154 holds not only a razor edge but a working edge longer too. I will say that the benchmade also holds a sharper working edge Too. I felt like the vg10 stayed razor for a while but basically skipped over a working edge and went to dull. I like 154cm in general better than vg10 overall.

Interesting. I own both of those knives as well and I feel the exact opposite. I much prefer the VG-10 over the 154cm. Easier to sharpen and in my experience holds it longer.

Can't speak about spyderco's vg10, but I've had BM's 154cm in three knives and each time I found it to be chippy. I had to keep the edges at about 40 degrees inclusive just so the steel wouldn't chip out on me. Third time was a charm and I decided to give up on 154cm, at least from BM. I also found the same issue with their D2, finally giving up on BM altogether. Other knives from other well known manufacturers haven't had close to the same issues. I keep my s30v blade also 30 degrees inclusive, my PSF27 blade at 18 degrees inclusive with a 26 degree inclusive tertiary bevel, and my Elmax blade at about 24 degrees inclusive. No problems on any of them. The only problem I had any of them, and it wasn't really a problem, was that I took that PSF27 to 9 degrees per side and the edge was very unstable in my normal duties, leading to the tertiary bevel. It cuts like a demon.

Im very surprised, ive dropped my benchmade off of a ladder edge first into a brick and my edge just rolled a little, ive never chipped 154cm ever.

Definately strange, i can sharpen the 154cm from extremely dull to shaving on diamond in 5 minutes but the vg10 from a working edge on the same diamond sharpener takes at least 30 minutes.

I am not familiar with Spyderco VG10, but am a big fan of Benchmade's 154cm. Generally I thin it down to 30* since they tend to come pretty thick from the factory, and go with a coarse/medium finish - 320 grit or so. Similar to 440c and D2 in my philosophy - will take a finer edge but holds a fairly coarse one a lot longer with no fuss.

Yes, I put coarse edge mostly on my benchmade 154cm knives and love how the steel reacts to it.Spyderco vg10 is ok, but I am more fan of coarse or somewhere in the middle finished edges. All my coarse edges still push cut paper pretty well so it might not be too coarse.

ps.regarding Spyderco I like their s30v much better than vg10, takes crazy sharp toothy edge easily and cuts for long time.Never had any problem with chipping , maybe some micro ships that I do not care or see lol.Wish they made Endura in S30v or d2.
