Recently, I bought a Benchmade 162 bushcraft knife. I tried using a fire steel with and the steel left black marks on the spine that don't want to come off. This hasn't happened to my Buck Selkirk or other knives I've been using in that way. Anybody else have this experience? Thanks for any response. Rick

Firesteels will mark up just about anything, especially carbon steels. Happens to my 162 as well. If you want to remove the marks, try Barkeepers Friend.

Thanks for that reply..... I've tried a magic eraser with no improvement and I have Barkeepers Friend so thanks for the reply......

It's normal, mine does the same thing but why worry over something so trivial? If you intend on keeping a knife pristine then you likely should just leave it in the box... about the only way you're going to remove it is sandpaper.

Scrapes and scratches happen when you're using your tools, and won't effect it's function in the least.

Awesome knife thou, I absolutely love mine. Takes and holds an insane edge, and after a slight reprofile it bites like a scandi grind but also makes really fine feathers when you want it too.

What brand firesteel are you using? I haven't run into that problem with the bushcrafter. I also haven't seen it happen to aus 8 either. I once used the blade edge of a Mora hd carbon on a rod to start a fire and as an above poster said a little sandpaper and problem gone.

Mine does it with exotac, light my fire, no name antler handle one, and tbd pathfinder. Doesn't do it every time...think it just depends on the angle you strike it at..

I've never had to use more than a finger or cloth to wipe off the black on a aus8 or the Benchmade bushcrafter. I wonder if it happens due to multiple rapid strikes?
Perhaps it is just the angle as you say. Interesting.

Yea, it's really not even that bad...it just leaves a faint line sometimes.

Likely occurs when you scrape at a low angle as the entire spine is basically being drug across the ferro rod...just scuffs the finish a lil...They don't even show up in pix.

I have the same thing, to one extent or another, on all my knives. I've tried Flitz and Simichrome, but neither really made a difference. It doesn't bother me but I know for some it's an issue. About the only thing I avoid now is using the spine for a flint striker. That chewed them up pretty bad, and those were "beauty marks" I'd rather not have to deal with.
