I just received a benchmade 180 outbounder the other day. It was a beautiful knife, but I was quite disappointed to find the stitching at the bottom of the sheath was missing for better than 1/4". Knife goes real deep into the sheath!!! right out the bottom!!!!!

I called benchmade to see if I could get a replacement sheath sent to me if I sent them the other. I explained to them that I needed one quickly as I was going to need it this weekend. They would'nt budge so I offered to buy a new one. They told me it would be $40.00 dollars!!! wowww!!!
for any of you that have seen it it isnt a $20.00 sheath!!!
I make knives and I could make one sheath, sell it to someone else, have them sell it again and it would still be under $15.00.

Now either they are being ridiculous, or they're getting ripped off on these sheaths. anyway now that Ive vented I just am disappointed.
It should have been, "theoritically" caught before it left their factory, nothings perfect, but this had definite problems.

I have a number of knives that have sheaths that are left slightly open at the bottom as a way for water to escape. Do I understand correctly that the knife actually protrudes out of the bottom of the sheath?

Did the Benchmade customer service representative say they would replace the sheath but not in a hurry or did they refuse to replace it at all? In any case, it is unfortunate that they passed on an opportunity to provide excellent service.

as far as the sheath goes the tip ortrudes a little past the bottom. There is a long thread hanging off the bottom where it should be stitched.

as far as cust srv goes they said they would replace it if I sent the sheath and knife back. The problem I had was that they werent willing to send it ahead of time. I had said that I would send the sheath right away if they could send a new one, as I needed it this weekend. they wouldnt budge, I wonder if they knew how many of their knives Ive bought if it would have made a difference, probably not.

what gets me is how the sheath ever left that factory in the shape its in!!!

rev...

The Outbounder is a pretty nice knife..

The sheath however is a piece of $hit...Typical..

If you are interested, I make a Concealex sheath for the Outbounder...

Drop me a note some time..

ttyle

Eric...

A quick fix would be to take the sheath to a shoe repair shop and they can add the few stiches in minutes, probably at no charge.;) The 180's that I've sold in my shop have been perfect. Sorry you got a lemon.

Eric...

Normark makes great kydex sheaths. I would get one from him before I bought another from Benchmade. The shoe repair idea sounds like a good idea.

The sheath sucks, and it was the leather that drew me to the knife in the first place. I pulled the knife out and noticed leather chunks on the blade. After about the third time I noticed that the blade had just about cut through the sheath. Cheap! :( The blade it's self is quite nice, especially the redwood handle.I am glad I only spent $50.00 bucks on it NIB, $40.00 to replace it seems crazy. I will be looking for someone to make a custom sheath for it so the thing can actually be used in the outdoors. I expected a bit more from benchmade on this one.

Thanks guys I appreciate it very much. I can make a sheath for it, but it was the principal of the thing that I found irritating. I am going to send the sheath to them with a courteous note.

thanks again!!!!

one item of note, for anyone that owns or has seen one. Did you notice that the way it is wet molded that the blade when inserted, or taken out, the edge rides between the wedge and the front piece of the sheath, basically causing it to cut the stitching?
