Benchmade 30 carry

Real quick off the top of my head (I have looked up the most recent statutes before many times, I'm just tired):
-SC you can carry anything you darn well please, even full switchblades, so long as it's not in school or during the commission of a crime. Beware some city laws might be more strict.
-VA the statutory text does not contain any language directly applicable to a balisongs. A high court acquitted a man of carrying a balisong because they did not find it to be "a weapon of like kind."
-NC like VA doesn't name them outright, but could include them due to vague language. Open carry is always legal. For concealed carry, statute excempt's pocket knives, which are defined thus:
"ordinary pocket knife" means a small knife, designed for carrying in a pocket or purse, that has its cutting edge and point entirely enclosed by its handle, and that may not be opened by a throwing, explosive, or spring action

Well my interpretation I would think would be, due to the fact a balisong when closed in the lock position one of the right size would fit the pocket knife description and could not be opened by any of those techniques.

It is opened by a throwing motion so it does not count as a normal pocket knife. Granted you can throw open most folding knives, but balisongs are designed around being opened by a throwing motion and momentum.

I edc a spyderco smallfly in NC and have yet to run into any problems. but I am a discreet person. I dont flip it down the street and only take it out when im about to use it. basically the same way i treat my emersons or switches. you might get a few odd looks but as long as you treat it as a tool not a toy and keep your nose clean it shouldnt be an issue.

also no blades of any kind on school grounds. felony if your unlucky.

Yea, I would never just walk around flipping the balisong, only when I am about to use it. Just as long as its legal or for the most part legal that is somewhat comforting.

as far as i can tell the law in nc is that all same laws that apply to fixed blades apply to balisongs and switchblades. as long as its not concealed your good to go. Im not really sure if a pocket clip counts as visable or not but like i said i havent run into any problems but I havent had any run ins with the police.

What exactly would constitute as open carry, and especially what would be open carry for a balisong.

I've seen a couple of kydex sheaths for balisongs that are designed for belt carry that leave about an inch or a little more of the knife sticking up out of the sheath. This would likely count as open carry. Also, a friend of mine is in law enforcement here in North Carolina. I'll just ask him about it.
