I would like to see a couple pictures of a Benchmade 440 Opportunist with something else please. I am very interested in seeing the thickness of the liner lock.

If somebody could post a few pictures with maybe a Delica, or a Griptilian or a SAK or something I would really appreciate it.

For those of you who have one, do you like it? Is it a good knife? Seems as it would make a nice "gents knife".

Sorry I can't post pics, but I can tell you that it is a very high quality knife. Of all the Benchmade knives that I have owned and handled, it has the best fit and finish (admittedly, I have only handled one 440). The blade grind is impeccable.

The liner is about 1.5mm thick. Lockup is very good. Very smooth action.

I carry mine daily as my "go to work in slacks" knife. Typical BM fit and finish, ie. good. Take note that it is a small knife and not the usual overbuilt BM knife but I think you know this already.

My favourite feature of this knife is that the stop pin has about 8 sides, each side has a slightly different radius to the centre of the stop pin. As the liner lock wears, the stop pin can be rotated to present a new face against the tang until a face is found which eliminates the up-down wobble due to the worn liner.

I do not know why BM does not advertise this feature more agressively and why all liner lock makers do not incorporate this feature. My main peeve about liner locks is that the blade will develop up-down wobble as the liner wears.

Thank you. I did not realize that the wood stuck up off of the handle. I am not sure that I like that.

I really like it. It opens fast and looks nice. I'd carry it more if it had a pocket clip (the coin pocket doesn't work for me). If I had to wear slacks every day, it'd be my EDC.

Bungwrench, the wood overlays make the knife a bit more rounded and better feeling in the hand. Otherwise, due to the smallness of the knife, it may feel a bit too angular.

The overlays are a plus in my opinion.

This knife is perfect for office carry and the wood overlays give it a nice feel.

I think you will like it.

Good knife, useful blade. Not tons to grip but enough to do the job. Great gents knife. This knife has an adjustable stop pin. Each facet of the pin is a different amount off center to give you some adjustability down the line as it wears.

Sorry for resurrecting such an old thread, but I found one of these knives yesterday out in the desert and was looking for info on it. It appears mine is early, no pocket clip and the blade says, " First Production 0914/1000".
Anyone have any light to shine on my nice find?

It's a nice find, that's for sure.

The knife never came with a pocket clip, so don't be concerned about it missing one. The steel is S30V if I remember correctly. Handles are made of aluminum with a stabilized wood panel.

The "First Production" means just that... it was one of the first 1000 made. In my book, it really doesn't add any collector value to it. I have a bunch of Benchmades that are first production run pieces, and I generally wear that label off pretty quick.

There are still plenty of YouTube video reviews of this knife out there. They should shine more light on your find.

from what i understand a later run of these did have a pocket clip, maybe just the last run before the were discontinued?
