Benchmade 484-1 Eats Hand

When I close my 484-1 one handed the tip of the blade actually hits the pad of my hand on the way to closing. I think it is just due to the size of the knife. However I regularly carry knives that are both bigger and smaller and have never had this issue. Anyone else ever run into this? More of a curiosity than anything else. I can correct the issue by being more thoughtful when I close the knife, but it is still kind of a bummer. I really like the knife otherwise.

My 484 has a very close handle-to-blade ratio. When I close mine one-handed, however, the knife is resting upright in my palm and the blade closes with nothing in it's path. I'm not sure how you're closing yours so that the tip hits your hand, but I've never had a problem with the way I hold the 484 to close it. I use my thumb and second finger to work the AXIS lock and my first finger to move the blade closed. I do keep my pivots tight enough so that the blades on my knives won't move by themselves. They have to be moved either open or closed.

I keep my pivots on my Benchmades as free as possible and still have both centering and no blade play in the open and locked position.

That said - I, like dale, am having trouble picturing how you'd be gripping and manipulating the knife to close it to have this happen. I'll hold the handle near vertically, gripping the handle along the spine, and pull the axis lock down and the blade falls shut unobstructed due to gravity.

Actually, my 484-1 is the easiest of my Benchmades to do this with. Darn near frictionless pivot when the axis lock is disengaged.

I have big and small axis locked knives. I'm not sure how you're doing that.

Butt of the handle in the middle of the palm, reach with thumb and forefinger for the axis, graze the hypothenar eminence with the blade as you swing it closed. Try it, it's fun!

If I'm understanding you, you're holding the knife almost vertically in your palm (probably the OP's method, too) when you close it? I lay the knife horizontally in my palm, just like it lays when I'm using it. That keeps flesh out of the way when the blade closes.

That's exactly how my 484 closes on me. And I got the same reactions as you are here.

My mini-grip does this if I'm not careful.

Just be careful not to choke up so much.

Thanks everyone, this is the first knife that has done this to me. I think it is due to the smaller handle. If I hold the knife more in my finger tips when I close it and don't allow it to sink all the way into my palm I am safe. Lesson learned! Just wanted to make sure I wasn't alone with it.
