hey all!

i just had to share my experience with the new Benchmade 485 Valet. i saw the recent buzz about it and after a promotional email and that promo selling out soon after i went and found one is stock to try it out. m390 is my new favorite steel, the Benchmade 761 was a huge win IMO and i just liked the all around look of the blade and handle, and the size was just perfect.

today i received my specimen. it is TIGHT. i immediately started to adjust the pivot with a little loc-tite, and wasnt having very much luck finding a happy medium. it seems like when it flips open perfectly, it doesn't want to close. once i was in ballpark area after some micro-turns, i checked to see how the blade play might be since the pivot screw was not terribly tight. play had developed. on top of that, the axis button on it is very sharp, and the omega spring is ALSO VERY TIGHT. it hurts to deploy the axis with just the thumb, you need to use your thumb and forefinger (like the manix). one other negative, the deep carry pocket clip's screws are gonna tear up your pants with their placement.

the fit and finish are great! i really like how small is it, and i really like the blade design. this is a great knife! i don't know if one of the washers is dinged or it is simply a lack of lubrication, but its that along with an extremely tight omega spring that is making this knife unsatisfactory to me. it really is a shame to have to send it back, but i would rather spend my dollars on something with a tight fit and finish, and smooth, near perfect functionality out of the box. i understand that some slip through the cracks, as ive experienced before. but no loc-tite or precise micro turn is going to get this one to where it should be.

i am curious to see if anyone else had the same results! i hope not, as i wish to eventually acquire a working specimen.

Haven't got one but like the looks. Thank you for this mini-review.

Did you try adding lubrication and keeping it tight enough to eliminate play? The screw-heads could be polished down a bit, as could the axis-pins, and the springs should break in (and hopefully not actually break) ... already sent it back?

no i havent tried adding lubrication, only because i know the omega spring is so tight that it is a main factor in the issue with the blade opening...otherwise the adjustment to the pivot would yield more results. i havent sent it back JUST YET but ive got the return label sitting in my inbox and another package need be delivered anyway. im sure theres much more i could do, but the omega springs will have to be broken in more than any other benchmade ive owned to date. and the axis button so sharp...not something i would be looking foreward to.

the last benchmade i received was the 761, and it was understandably better for the price. but the feeling i got when i opened that knife was extraordinary...even more than many others! i was thoroughly impressed. with this 485 i can see the quality here, it screams it! but the all around functionality is very poor...its like it was unfinished. im guessing that they were rushed out for the new year which is a shame...i would really enjoy one that worked flawlessly out of the box. i am a STICKLER but ive even come to live with the blade a bit off center on a benchmade, this is just poop my friends.

i really dont think blade play is an issue, that only happened because i was attempting to adjust the pivot since it was loose.

Mine came loose (lots of side to side play) and I had to tighten up the pivot. Once I did that it was really difficult to open. So I removed the blade, polished the washers and re-lubed the pivot. That and a little tweaking and now it is fine.
I removed the clip, I think I like the 485 better without the clip.

is the omega spring on yours tighter than usual?
