Picked this up from New Graham Knives, great place btw ;)
Knife is the smaller version but for me a handier size with a
blade just under 3" long. The handle is similar to the full size
knife with a thick aluminum scales that are bead blasted and
have grooves that face inward from each end of the handle
making an excellent griping surface, of course along with that
nice grippy texture, comes an abrasive pocket wearing feature
if you use the clip, BUT remove the clip and the knife fits the
hand very nicely, so a sheath is in the near future, right now
I have a few great pairs of pants by Columbia, they have a neat
side pocket with a velcro closure at the top and a pen pocket
adjacent to that, not cargo pants but a sleek side pocket.
It also has a security pocket on the right front side, so you have
a main pocket, which also has an internal small cubby hole pocket
for change! and behind that is another full length pocket that has
a zipper closure, I had missed these pants for a long time, but since
dropping my weight down I can now fit into these 33" waist pants
once again! :)

Back to the knife, the blade is flat ground and comes down to a convex
like edge, push cuts like a dream, I touched up the edge a little on arrival
and it tree top cuts hair easily now, very sharp knife.

Lockup is also solid, the axis lock mech seems to work great, I can pull back
on the lock and lightly flick the knife into operation quickly.

A very robust knife, some may say it's too bulky but for me I like a knife
that while in use doesn't twist in your hand, the guard area is very secure
and provides a safe feeling while cutting.

Highly recommend this one, while I liked the larger version,
it was just too large for me, I know a lot of you guys like a great big folder,
but they often get in the way of themselves in every day type of use.

I was actually wondering how the 525 felt against the 520!

Always liked the looks of the 520, but like yourself I think I would prefer the 3" blade 4" handle size of the 525. I'm a "mini" kind of knife guy :D

I've seen a couple 520s that have had the back scale replaced with smooth G10, which solves the abrasion problem. The machining around the Axis lock isn't trivial, though; but if I was in charge over at Benchmade, I'd CNC out a few sets of smooth sales and offer them as an option, for cost + shipping. But that's just me. :D

I've heard others have made scales for the 520 with good success but I like the grip these scales provide, especially without the clip on there, the knife really handles well, if you haven't tried it without the clip, give it a go, takes a Torx T6 wrench to remove the screws.

Glad to hear yours came with a good edge Gary. I've been tempted to pick up a new Benchmade, but past experience with their thick edges have caused me to be a little hesitant. It seems that may be changing though from what I've been reading. Thanks for the review.

I just have a 806 with an edge that could or should be called thick, even though it fits the concept of that knife.

I just had the chance to have a few days with a Spyderco Paramillie and wondered why ppl. never talked about this thick edge. Because any other BM i have (550, 140HS, 520, 5000A) has a much thinner edge.

Sometimes i think some ppl. opinion is based on yesterday information and prejudges.

You should give them a chance if some designs do please you.

Gary, do you have any idea how the 525 compares, in terms of size and heft, to the 705 and the 707?

Gary,

I'm curious about the size of the handle as well, specifically the length and thickness of it.

Can't speak for the 707 but the 705 is a bit smaller and lighter in comparison.

4 1/8" long
and about 1/2" thick, nice fitting handle, good guard top and bottom.

Probably some kind of record for me, ;) holding on to a knife this long
but the 525 is that kind of knife, I was comparing this to some other knives
cutting into some leather and the 525 really blows away the competition quite
easily, very sharp edged blade and the grip is just dandy, less the clip of course.
