hi guys,

i think about getting a new Benchmade 530. i like the design of the knife but i looks like it could break easily. can anyone tell me if the 530 is as robust as a griptilian?
i do not abuse my knives but i want to use them without being afraid that i will break em.
i appreciate your comments.

cheers,
j5

I own one and EDC it every now and then. I've had it about 6 months and it's taken everything I've dished it. I was surprised at how sturdy it was. I remember taking it out of the box and thinking... ok this is kind of flimsy... then I started using it and was pleasantly surprised. It locks up strong, absolutely zero blade play and is excellent all around. I also love how slim it is. Really great for when I need to wear dress slacks or a suit. Decent gentleman's carry.

+1 to what xjzhx just said!

Its noticeably thinner than the grip but it feels just as sturdy. Great knife for edc. It's so light that you totally forget it's riding with you.

It's a great knife for the price and makes for a pretty good EDC. I had one for a bit, and gave it to one of my knife-less friends who EDC's it every day now... I think somewhere has them in blue grivory scales...

I own 3 of them one i bought 4 years ago (was my first benchmade) and i have given that thing the ride of its life been all over the world in fact survived all the beatings i've given it, next benchmade sent me a custom lasermarked 530sbk for having a benchmade tattoo :), third i just bought about 2 weeks ago and its the 530-901 (blue scales) with s30v and let me say it has blown me away it is scary sharp!!! KW has them for 80 bucks i must also say the scales are actually a little darker than what the pictures show and i love it!!!

It's a very light but very sturdy knife. One of my favorite EDC knives b/c of its lightness.

thank you guys. you really helped me out here!

the s30v version is the reason for me asking. i never ever tried s30v - or any other cpm steel - but i would love to plus the design is just awesome.

+1 to xjzhx. When I first held mine I thought it felt flimsy and I was disappointed, but the more I used it the more I liked it. Now I think it feels really sturdy since I know what it can take. I would say it feels sturdier than my grip, which still seems a little hollow to me. Super solid lockup too.

I had the opportunity to pick one up today and I turned it down due to the pricepoint and how cheap it felt. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow and grab one.

I've had one for a while - it's a great knife but it is not nearly as robust as a Grip or a Mini-Grip. If you like to do things like pry with the blade, you're going to have problems. Look at the other side of that, though: it is incredibly thin and light. For what it is, it is a fabulous knife and a great light duty EDC.

It's a very thin blade and the handles do not have full steel liners. There is some steel which supports the AXIS lock mechanism, but I wouldn't call them true "liners". Also, the thumb stud and the AXIS pin are not as easy to use than the same on say, a Griptilian or Mini-Griptilian. They are designed to be more streamlined and subdued, following with the sleek overall design of the knife. For some people it's not an issue, but for me, it was always hard to get the blade in and out compared to some other AXIS lock folders.

The only reason I'd recommend one over a Grip or Mini-Grip is if you like the blade design. Otherwise, in my opinion, the latter make for better EDC AXIS lock folders in the lower price-points.

In the butterfly inside, I like this 530, the lightweight, strong, easy to use, carry around easily. Thank you.

Get it :D

I had one of the black ones way back when they came out and replaced with a blue/s30v one a couple months back. It's one of my favorite knives, I have never thought it felt cheap like the Griptilians do... Nor do I think it would be too delicate to be up to any reasonable task you would need to to accomplish. I typically carry Striders, CRK and other larger benchmades which should give you some idea of what I have to compare it to :)
